Rory’s WITB this week interestingly enough consisted of a single club manufacturer. We rarely see this. Rahm and Homa come to mind as examples of “I’ve got love for only one” dance partners, but most players, even with endorsement deals, mix and match.
It just rarely happens with top players. We’re guessing with Rors that’s intentional/mandatory and due to him being paid handsomely (>$10M annually) by TaylorMade. Hell, he even plays with a special iron grind, which is influenced by Tiger’s who is also on TaylorMade tour staff. The Rors grind isn’t available for purchase by the public.
When your manufacturer makes you your own custom set of irons to ensure you put into play a set with their brand on it, the R&D department has one job. Rory must play TaylorMade—and win—at all cost.
- It’s Open Championship season so Rory put into his bag a juiced 2-iron this week to prep for next week’s major championship. The shot he pulled off with it on 18 yesterday was sick.
- Rory plays with the stiffest shafts on tour. There are a handful of others that join him at that level, but no one beats him. With a swing with as much torque and speed as he’s got, he needs light poles to keep the club face square through impact.
- You can’t walk into WWGS or PGATSS and buy what Rory plays with. His 2/4 irons were manufactured 6 years ago and his woods’ shafts run $350 per and aren’t stock. Special gear for a generational talent who doesn’t pay for shitz
