What’s in the Bag: Joe Highsmith, 2025 Cognizant Classic

Joe Highsmith must have woken up Saturday morning in Palm Beach feeling unstoppable—breezing through PGA National with a 7-under 64. He kept the momentum rolling into Sunday, sealing his PGA TOUR victory with another 64 and celebrating in style, trophy in one hand and a big, fat, fake Cognizant Classic check in the other. Not a bad weekend.

Like many young players still making a name for themselves, Highsmith sticks to equipment from a single manufacturer—Titleist, in his case—along with a bucket hat only a mother could love.

Until now, his PGA TOUR career hadn’t exactly been headline material. Sure, he kept his card after the ’24 season, but with the tour tightening its FedEx Cup cut line from 125 to 100 players, his path forward wasn’t getting any easier. That’s no longer a concern. With this win, he’s locked in through the 2026 season and can now shift his focus to golf’s biggest stages.

Highsmith’s Cognizant WITB Takeaways:

  1. Knowing he was going to be playing in windy conditions, he teed it up with a 2-iron (T200) vs a 5/7 wood which we’ve seen recently in most bags on tour. Floridian Billy Horschel pointed out earlier in the week that the overseed process that eliminated Bermuda grass conditions at PGA National helped Highsmith make up his mind on what to carry. No Bermuda, no need for a utility or high-lofted utility club.
  2. For only $750, you too could purchase and play with his driver model, Titleist’s GT3. Just make sure to order the correct hand; Highsmith is a lefty, and you are probably not.
  3. Vokey wedges. No shit Sherlock.
  4. Notes from Scotty Cameron’s crew on the putter Highsmith used this week to win: Made for the tour 009 prototype in a black oxide finish at 350g. Newport 1.5 style head with a scotty dog, a jester stamp, a circle T stamp, a sight dot, a retro stamp and ‘ROLL’ ‘TOP’ stamped on the flange bumpers. Emphasis on ‘made for the tour.’ 99% of golfers should be using a mallet. This is a big boy putter.
  5. ProV1 versus a ProV1x or a left dot, right dot, pink dot, etc. model.
