The more you compare the payouts for the PGA Tour’s “Elevated events” and LIV events to tourneys like the Valero or Honda or The American Express, the more it becomes clearer why you are seeing less and less stars playing in events where only the winner takes home seven figures. In the bigger PGA Tour/LIV events, 4-5 top finishers are taking home >$1M, and everyone who makes the cut or finishes the 54-hole shotgun is taking home bank.
Conners played admirably. Hell, half-a-dozen guys on Sunday had a real chance to lift the Big-A Trophy, but very few were ever going to take home enough money to change their future lifestyle or vacation plans.
We hope the Tour’s plan for balancing Elevated and non-Elevated events comes together and succeeds. They need to find sponsors to feed the 2nd tier events with bigger purses so that at least a dozen or so stars show up. If not, tourneys like the Valero—and the Valero-level partners on Tour—will cease to exist.
