PGA TOUR Champions star Jerry Kelly teaches us how to play in extreme winds

At one time or another, we have all played golf in what surely felt like gale-force winds.

In addition to the tips that Jerry shares below, we have three primary best practices we follow when getting whipped around by Mother Nature out on the links.

  1. Take at least one more club than what you think you should hit. For example, if you normally hit a 7-iron 140 yards in calm conditions, and you feel like hitting a 5-iron is the right club into a 35-mile-an-hour wind, choke down and hit a smooth 4-iron. Throw away any ego you have tied to how far you hit it when playing in windy/gusty conditions.
  2. Swing 3/4 speed. Overswinging is the WORST THING YOU CAN DO IN THE WIND. The harder you swing, the more spin you impart on the ball. More spin = off-the-planet shots.
  3. Lower your expectations, a lot. Enjoy the challenge of playing in tougher conditions. Just know going in you will shoot a higher-than-average score and that is ok.
