Captain America Delivers: Keegan Bradley Wins Travelers as Fleetwood Falters
Keegan Bradley gave New England golf fans a patriotic thrill Sunday, winning the Travelers Championship for the second time in three years. With chants of “USA! USA!” raining down at TPC River Highlands, Bradley stuck a 9-iron to six-feet on the final hole and drained the birdie to edge Tommy Fleetwood by one. Even though he pocketed $3,600,000 and won a cool trophy—who doesn’t love winning trophies?—his biggest prize for winning yesterday very well may be the golden ticket he gives himself to play in the Ryder Cup in late September.
“I feel an obligation to play for the people of New England,” said Bradley, clutching his American flag-wearing son. “And this is the best way I can do it.”
The win gives Bradley eight career PGA Tour titles—and a real dilemma as Ryder Cup captain. He’s now forced to consider making himself a rare playing captain at Bethpage Black in September.
Meanwhile, Fleetwood’s U.S. Woes Continue
Fleetwood, a Ryder Cup lock for Europe, led late but faltered over the final stretch. He missed a six-footer for birdie at 14, made bogey at 16, and left his birdie putt short on 18—right next to Bradley’s mark, unintentionally giving the American a read. He missed. Keegan made. Fleetwood misses out on winning on tour once again. It was hard to watch. My wife even shed a tear. Then I told her he won $1.7M for his pain and suffering. Her tears quickly dried up.
Fleetwood now holds the unfortunate record for most top-10s (42) without a PGA Tour win since 1983. Ever classy, he remained upbeat.
“When it happens, it will be very, very sweet,” he said.
Translation: Please let it happen already.
Ryder Cup Implications
Bradley had previously said he’d only consider playing if he won. Well… he won. With the clock ticking toward Bethpage, the captain may have just played himself into the lineup.
Winners & Losers from Sunday at the Travelers:
Loser: Max Greyserman. Like Hovland, Max was in good shape after Saturday to make a charge up the board. But didn’t. His final round 74 cost him 22 spots and $300k or so.
Winner: Bradley. As much as we hated to see Fleetwood shite the bed once again, we loved seeing Bradley win in dramatic fashion on 18. Let’s gooooo Keegan! Now comes a tough decision: If he doesn’t auto-qualify for the U.S. Ryder Cup squad, does he pick himself? We hope he does, in a big way. What a story that would be.
Loser: Fleetwood. That was hard to watch. He’s a favorite of most ardent golf fans on both sides of the pond. We are hopeful he finishes the year strong and captures his 1st PGA TOUR victory.
Loser: Viktor Hovland. After firing a 7-under 63 on Saturday, he jumped way up the leaderboard, positioning himself to make a top-5 charge on Sunday. But he was forced to WD. Ouch.
Winner: U.S. Open Champion J.J. Spaun. Spaun opened with a pedestrian 4-over, 73/71 Thursday and Friday. But he fired scores of 66 and 63 Saturday and Sunday, winning the weekend. He jumped from damn near last to T-14. Sunday alone, he moved up 32 spots on the board. That a kid!
