Do most golfers use too much grip pressure with their driver?
Yes.
When golfers try and hit big rippers versus fairway finders are they more apt to grip it too tightly or too loosely?
Too tightly, and it’s not even close.
When we are under pressure to hit an important drive are our shoulders, arms, forearms, and hands more likely to tighten up or feel loosey goosey?
More likely to choke the goose than to let it loose!
Unless you are Freddy, Ernie or Lydia Ko, 99% of all golfers, tour pros included, get tense when they’re under pressure.
Muscles begin to tighten up and releasing the club becomes far too hard to maintain any consistency off of the tee. Just watch the final 9-holes of a major championship. You’ll see more duck hooks and fanners during the final 2-hours of a Sunday broadcast than you’ll ever see the first 3.5 days of TV time.
Our best stress beater tips to hit better tee shots:
- Don’t grip it too tight. Imagine a little toothpaste bubbling up out of a new tube.
- Yo Popeye. Make sure to maintain soft forearms.
- Take a few deep breaths before you set up to hit your tee shot.
- Chew gum. Yep. Chew gum. It’ll help relax your mouth, neck, and shoulders. We are being serious. Just ask Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson. All Hall of Famers by a mile and pervasive gum chewers.
