Chris Gotterup, yesterday’s Scottish Open victor, is one of the first “mostly” equipment free agents to win on tour in 2025. His only endorsement relationship we could uncover on the interwebs is one with his ball company, Bridgestone. And here’s a little nugget of insight for you: He also plays their recently launched 220 MB irons. We haven’t even seen those yet in the flesh. Now we have a reason to hunt down the model at our local Roger Dunn or PGA TOUR Superstore.
For Gotterup, his victory yesterday marked a meaningful moment for two key equipment brands in his bag. As a Bridgestone staffer, he plays the company’s Tour B X golf ball and their newly released 220 MB irons — a product that hadn’t seen the winner’s circle until now.
In fact, Bridgestone hadn’t released a new iron in five years, and Gotterup’s win is the first Tour victory for their irons since Matt Kuchar won the 2019 Sony Open. Like most muscle back (MB) irons, the 220 MB blades are designed for elite ball strikers. The top 1% of you reading you this article.
While Bridgestone earned a well-deserved headline, TaylorMade also made a big impression. Gotterup’s Spider putter is part of a family that has now won 24 times since the start of 2024. That’s crazy. Sure, many of those victories were earned by Scheff and Rory, but a bunch of other players, many of whom don’t get paid by TaylorMade, have lifted trophies after draining snakes with their Spider.
TaylorMade’s fairway woods also continue to rack up wins. Their continued dominance in this category is a testament to the performance and versatility of the line. It also wasn’t too long ago that Brooksie was winning majors with his 10-year-old TaylorMade 3-wood.
But perhaps the most interesting piece in Gotterup’s bag? A 10-year-old TaylorMade RSi TP UDI 1-iron. That’s right. He brought a knife to a gun fight with Rory on Sunday and slayed one of the giants of golf.
Gotterup’s performance was a coming-out party, but also a showcase of trusted gear choices, mixing new technology with proven tools. If this is just the beginning, he’s already got the setup — and the swagger — to go a long way.
