Team USA brought out the big sticks at Medinah—and apparently the big putters, too.
The 2026 Presidents Cup started looking like a potential disaster for Team USA.
Then Sunday happened. And their putters got hot. Patrick Cantlay’s literally caught fire on the back nine as he scorched Adam Scott and the greens at Medinah. C.C. #3.
Fans and pundits can point to solid ball-striking and elevated match-play tactics as fuel for the US victory Sunday, but anyone who knows golf is pointing to the putters in each player’s bag as the key to what turned out to be a historic comeback victory for the US.
The mallet putter.
According to GOLF.com, all 12 members of the victorious U.S. team used mallet-style putters, including five TaylorMade Spider models and four Scotty Cameron Phantom models. God-given talent and equipment decisions led the Americans to post seven of the nine best putting displays during the event (Strokes Gained: Putting).
So, naturally, we had to take a closer look at what Team USA was rolling on the greens.
Team USA Presidents Cup WITB: The Putters
Jacob Bridgeman
TaylorMade Spider Tour
- Hosel: Short Slant
- Loft: 2.5°
- Length: 33.75″
- Grip: SuperStroke 2.0 PT
Bridgeman came into the Presidents Cup as one of the best putters on the PGA Tour in 2026, and he finished the job in appropriate fashion.
With Team USA needing one final point, Bridgeman rolled in a four-footer on the 18th green to clinch the Presidents Cup.
Not exactly a bad advertisement for the Spider Tour.
Sam Burns
Odyssey Ai-One No. 7 S
- Hosel: Slant
- Loft: 3°
- Length: 35″
- Grip: Winn
Burns went with the Odyssey Ai-One No. 7 S, giving Team USA’s otherwise Spider-and-Phantom-heavy putter lineup a little Odyssey representation.
The No. 7 shape has been a staple of Odyssey’s mallet lineup, combining plenty of alignment assistance with a shape designed to promote stability.
Patrick Cantlay
TaylorMade Spider Tour X
- Hosel: Double Bend
- Loft: Not available
- Length: 35”
- Grip: SuperStroke
Cantlay is one of two Team USA players who were TaylorMade Spider users despite being gear free agents.
His Spider Tour X features the high-MOI design that has become synonymous with the Spider family.
And Cantlay put it to good use at Medinah, including an absolutely ridiculous 57-footer from off the green during Sunday’s comeback.
Wyndham Clark
PING Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset CB
- Hosel: Not available
- Loft: 3°
- Length: 38″
- Grip: SuperStroke Tour 3.0 17″
Clark was the outlier in Team USA’s mallet-heavy lineup.
His PING Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset CB is a long, counterbalanced-style setup with a 38-inch shaft and 17-inch SuperStroke grip.
Clark has been particularly comfortable with the putter since putting it in the bag earlier in 2026, and it helped him win the U.S. Open earlier this year.
Chris Gotterup
TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck
- Hosel: L-Neck
- Loft: 1.25°
- Length: 33.25″
- Grip: SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol 2.0
Gotterup had one of the more interesting putting stories of the week.
He led the entire 24-player Presidents Cup field in Strokes Gained: Putting, while using a Spider Tour X L-Neck.
Like Cantlay, Gotterup was a gear free agent, meaning he wasn’t getting paid to put a TaylorMade Spider in the bag.
That’s a pretty strong endorsement.
Russell Henley
Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 Tour Prototype
- Hosel: Not available
- Loft: Not available
- Length: Not available
- Grip: Not available
Henley went with a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 Tour Prototype.
The Phantom family has become one of the most recognizable mallet lines in professional golf, and Henley’s Tour Prototype gives him the stability of a mallet while retaining a relatively traditional visual profile.
Jackson Koivun
Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5R Tour Prototype
- Hosel: Jet Neck
- Loft: Not available
- Length: Not available
- Grip: Not available
Koivun made his Presidents Cup debut with one of the more interesting putters in the U.S. lineup.
His Phantom 9.5R Tour Prototype features rounded contours and a .5 jet neck designed to promote more toe flow.
And it wasn’t just sitting pretty in the bag.
Koivun finished his Presidents Cup debut with a 2-0-1 record.
Not a bad first week on the big stage for a guy many questioned selecting over others who had garnered more points leading up to the event.
Collin Morikawa
TaylorMade Spider Tour X
- Hosel: Flow Neck
- Loft: 2.5°
- Length: 34.0625″
- Grip: Golf Pride Tour Tradition
Morikawa’s Spider Tour X has a Flow Neck configuration and a relatively compact 34-inch length. (He is one of the shorter players on the PGA Tour.)
But the real story was what he did with it.
Morikawa matched Hideki Matsuyama’s 45-foot bomb early in their Sunday singles match before following it up with another 31-footer on the 15th hole.
That’s one way to turn a Presidents Cup match around.
Xander Schauffele
Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas CH
- Hosel: Slant
- Loft: 3°
- Length: 34.5″
- Grip: SuperStroke Zynergy Pistol Lock 2.0
Schauffele brought an Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas CH to Medinah.
The Toulon Las Vegas is a more traditional-looking mallet/blade hybrid, giving Schauffele a different visual and feel profile from the Spider and Phantom-heavy lineup.
Scottie Scheffler
TaylorMade Spider Tour X
- Hosel: L-Neck
- Loft: 3°
- Length: 35.5″
- Grip: Golf Pride Pro Only
Yes, Scottie Scheffler uses a Spider.
The world’s best players are often creatures of habit, and Scheffler has used the Spider Tour X since switching to it in 2024.
His setup is relatively straightforward: L-Neck, full alignment line, Pure Roll insert and a 35.5-inch shaft.
Nothing particularly flashy.
Then again, Scottie doesn’t exactly need a flashy putter.
Justin Thomas
Scotty Cameron Phantom 10.5 Xperimental Prototype
- Hosel: Not available
- Loft: Not available
- Length: Not available
- Grip: Not available
JT had a putter adventure of his own during Presidents Cup week.
After spending much of the season using Cameron Young’s Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5R, Thomas moved into a Phantom 10.5 Xperimental Prototype for the Presidents Cup.
It’s another example of just how seriously Tour players take their putting equipment.
If something doesn’t look right, feel right or line up right, they’ll change it—even during one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
Cameron Young
Scotty Cameron Phantom 5.5 Tour Prototype
- Hosel: Not available
- Loft: Not available
- Length: Not available
- Grip: Not available
Young also made a putter switch at Medinah.
He moved from the Phantom 10.5 Xperimental Prototype he had used at the Tour Championship into a Phantom 5.5 Tour Prototype.
The reason?
Alignment.
Young reportedly liked the shorter sightline and centering alignment lines of the Phantom 5.5 better than the other models he had tested.
And that’s a good reminder that putting isn’t necessarily about finding the most technologically advanced putter.
Sometimes it’s simply about finding the one that looks right when you’re standing over a six-footer.
Team USA’s Presidents Cup Putter Count
TaylorMade Spider: 5
Scotty Cameron Phantom: 4
Odyssey: 1
PING: 1
Other Scotty Cameron: 1
Mallets: 12
Blades: 0
That’s about as convincing a Tour equipment trend as you’re going to find.
Team USA may have arrived at Medinah with a three-point deficit on Sunday, but their putters and strokes showed up!
Maybe the old saying needs an update:
Drive for show. Putts for dough. And apparently, mallets for Presidents Cups.
How do the US team’s putting stats rank against the best on the PGA TOUR?
