The Wyndham Championship Was More Than Just Another Tournament – Winners, Losers, and Payouts

For some players, the Wyndham Championship is simply the final event of the PGA TOUR regular season. For others, it is effectively a playoff game.

The Wyndham is the last chance for players to earn enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top 70, the cutoff for the FedExCup Playoffs. Once the final round is complete, the regular season is over and the 70-player playoff field is set. That makes every birdie, bogey and position on the leaderboard potentially meaningful for players hovering around the bubble.

And the 2026 Wyndham delivered plenty of drama.

Michael Brennan provided the most dramatic example. He entered the week ranked No. 105 in the FedExCup standings, meaning he needed a huge week to extend his season. He got exactly that, winning the Wyndham Championship by three strokes and jumping to No. 47 in the final standings. Brennan was the only player to move from outside the top 70 into the playoff field during the final week. He also pocketed $1.53 million. Not bad for a week’s worth of work.

But Brennan wasn’t the only player with plenty at stake.

The pressure extended all the way through the bubble. Jackson Koivun secured the final playoff position at No. 70, while Steven Fisk fell to No. 71. Koivun’s qualification also ended playoff streaks for several established stars, including Keegan Bradley, Jason Day and Tony Finau.

Koivun struggled on Sunday, perhaps feeling the pressure, and posted a one-over 71. He finished T-29, which was just good enough to secure the 70th and final spot in the playoffs. He made $51k, minus taxes and thousands he pays his “team” to keep him lean and mean during competition weeks.

That is what makes the Wyndham such a fascinating tournament. A player like Brennan sitting 105th in the standings can win and suddenly be playing the following week. A player who has spent years making the postseason can have his season end with one missed opportunity.

For Brennan, the stakes were especially high. He had already shown throughout the summer that he could contend, but he needed to turn those opportunities into a result. At Sedgefield, he did exactly that.

He didn’t just win a PGA TOUR tournament.

He played his way into the postseason.

And now, instead of packing his clubs away for the season, Brennan gets to take that winning bag to Memphis for the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Winners and Losers from Sunday at the Wyndham:

Winner: Tom Kim. He’s been on a heater, including his T-5 finish at the Wyndham. He’s now vaulted into position #26 in the FedEx Cup standings. He’s locked in Signature Events status for 2027 and is in good shape to make the Tour Championship in a few weeks – top 30 make the big payday soiree.

Winner: Mackenzie Hughes. He had a big jump on Sunday after firing a 5-under, 65, finishing up T-29. Right now he’s sitting in position #118 in the FedEx Cup points. He’ll have a half-dozen or so events this fall to jump into the top 100 to keep his card for the 2027 season.

Loser: Sahith. He was in prime position to possibly jump into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup race with a good Sunday, instead he limped home with a 4-over 74 and dropped 38 spots on the leaderboard, finishing up T-49. Ouch.

Loser: Koepka: He needed a Top 5 finish to make the playoffs but shot 74-70 over the weekend. He finished the season inside the Top 100, but for a world-class player like Koepka, returning to the tour after his LIV run, it was disappointing for him and his fans. He needs to play great golf early in ’27 to pick up Signature Event starts, or be exiled to smaller-tier events, which will make it even harder to grind his way back into relevancy.

Loser(ish): Beau Hossler. He’s a good player. He keeps his card every season and makes enough money to live in a fancy house or two. But until he can finish a tourney with a trophy on the 18th green, he’ll be tagged a journeyman. His four runner-up finishes on tour show immense promise, and his play this week was almost good enough to win. But a guy named Brennan, who is on paper a better player, bested Beau while Beau was playing probably his best golf.
