Winners, Losers & Payouts: Michael Thorbjornsen Breaks Through at the 2026 Rocket Classic, Outduels Xander Schauffele for First PGA TOUR Victory

For the first time in his PGA TOUR career, Michael Thorbjornsen isn’t the guy everyone says is about to win.

He’s finally the guy who did.

The former Stanford star delivered the performance golf fans have been waiting for, firing a brilliant final-round 64 to capture the 2026 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club. Thorbjornsen birdied five of his final nine holes, never made a bogey on Sunday, and finished at 18-under par, holding off Xander Schauffele by two shots to earn his first PGA TOUR title and a winner’s check worth $1.8 million. Thor the Golf Avenger avenged plenty of tour heartbreak Sunday.

It wasn’t just another breakthrough victory. It was validation.

For years, Thorbjornsen has been labeled one of the TOUR’s brightest young talents. Elite ball-striking. Plenty of speed. Unlimited upside. The only thing missing was a trophy.

Not anymore.

While Xander Schauffele (Xander’s 2025 winning WITB) mounted a charge and several players briefly threatened on the back nine, Thorbjornsen never flinched. He looked every bit like a future Ryder Cup player closing out the biggest win of his career.

With the FedExCup Playoffs beginning next week, the timing couldn’t have been better. For the first time, he’ll be playing in the playoffs with a decent shot at making the Tour Championship.

Winners & Losers from the 2026 Rocket Classic

Winner: Michael Thorbjornsen

This was the week everything finally came together.

Thorbjornsen has flirted with victory before, but this time he slammed the door shut. His bogey-free 64 on Sunday showcased every reason analysts have been raving about him since his amateur days. Long off the tee. Precise with his irons. Calm(ish) under pressure.

The victory not only earns him $1.8 million but also secures his PGA TOUR status and instantly changes the trajectory of his career. Did someone say, “Masters invite!”

Winner: Xander Schauffele

Another week.

Another contending finish. And a putter getting hotter. (Xander’s putting tips.)

Schauffele didn’t quite have enough to catch Thorbjornsen. However, his runner-up finish was worth $1.09 million and adds momentum heading into the postseason. IMHO, there is no question he has locked up his place on the US Presidents Cup squad and his spot in the Tour Championship, and he has put the tour on notice that his 11th tour victory is coming soon.

Winner: Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki Matsuyama reminded everyone why he’s one of the most dangerous players in the game when his swing is dialed in.

The former Masters champion closed with a 6-under 64, one of the day’s best rounds, vaulting into a tie for fifth at the Rocket Classic. While he never seriously threatened Michael Thorbjornsen down the stretch, Hideki’s Sunday charge earned him a healthy payday and, perhaps more importantly, plenty of momentum heading into the FedExCup Playoffs. His last serious victory, for him and his Srixon WITB setup, was the 2025 Hero World Challenge. He and his gear are due for another victory lap, and soon.

Winner: Rickie Fowler

Detroit has always been a comfortable place for Rickie Fowler. Especially off of the tee when he’s striping his driver.

While he wasn’t able to make a serious run at Michael Thorbjornsen on Sunday, Fowler closed with another solid week, finishing T8 at 12-under par and collecting $252,500. He and his mullet weren’t the stories of the tournament, but it was another encouraging performance as he builds momentum heading into the FedExCup Playoffs.

Fowler has shown flashes of the form that made him one of the TOUR’s biggest stars, and another top-10 finish is a step in the right direction.

Winner/Loser: Davis Riley

Quietly, Davis Riley played some outstanding golf last week. But he also took his foot off the pedal on Sunday when he needed to be speeding past the field.

His solo third-place finish earned him $690,000 while giving him valuable FedExCup points entering the Wyndham Championship. Sometimes the biggest winners are the players who keep themselves comfortably inside the playoff line.

Loser: Si Woo Kim

Saturday night, Si Woo Kim thought he had a solid chance to claim a top-10 finish, heck, potentially a top-5 finish if he posted a solid Sunday round.

By Sunday afternoon, that dream had disappeared.

Kim stumbled to a 4-over 74, tumbling 31 spots down the leaderboard to finish T-42 in one of the biggest Sunday slides of the tournament.

That’s what makes his season so frustrating. Tee-to-green, Kim has played some of the best golf on the PGA TOUR in 2026 and has put himself in contention multiple times. The problem? He just hasn’t been able to string together four complete rounds when it matters most.

It feels eerily similar to Lucas Glover’s season. The ball-striking is there. The opportunities are there. But somewhere during the week, one round has consistently gotten in the way.

Loser: Brad Dalke

Brad Dalke arrived in Detroit with plenty of buzz thanks to his success as one of the faces of Good Good Golf. Unfortunately, the PGA TOUR can be a rude awakening.

Dalke struggled to rounds of 81-75, finishing dead last (DFL) and missing the cut by a wide margin. It’s a reminder that entertaining millions on YouTube and competing against the best golfers in the world are two very different challenges.

This week, the Good Good guy played a little more like “Bogey Bogey.”

Final Thoughts

Michael Thorbjornsen will forever be remembered as the final Rocket Classic champion.

His first PGA TOUR victory came at the perfect time, earning him a playoff berth, a seven-figure payday, and the confidence that comes with closing out a world-class field. But Sunday’s finish was about more than one breakthrough.

It also marked the end of the Rocket Classic’s eight-year run in Detroit. Beginning in 2027, the tournament disappears from the PGA TOUR schedule, making Thorbjornsen the last player to hoist the trophy at Detroit Golf Club.

That’s a pretty good way to make history.
