Golf Terms Every Golfer Should Know – Golf 101

The concept of golf is pretty simple: take a club, set it behind a ball, and hit it as many times as necessary to get that ball into a cup. Then move on to the next hole and keep going—maybe until the sun goes down, your back gives out, or the course politely asks you to leave because you’ve played all 18 holes.

The game has its own language. Heck, most golfers each speak a different dialect on the course – a mix of common sense terms, slang, acronyms, gambling games, clubhouse lingo, and a good number of words you would never say in the presence of a grandparent. One thing is for certain: avid fans of the game speak a language incomprehensible to those who merely flip on a Masters telecast or wander out on the course for the first time on vacation.

To provide newbies a baseline of what we “golf experts” are all saying out on the links, we put together the ultimate golf terms glossary and organized everything into overly anal and unnecessary categories. Whether you’re brand new to the game, a weekend warrior, or someone who watches the PGA TOUR on ESPN before 10a, you’ll find plenty of terms worth knowing.

Beginner Golf Terms

Ace

A hole-in-one — the ball goes from the tee to the bottom of the cup in a single swing. It happens roughly once every 3,000 rounds for an average golfer, which is why the guy who made one in 2009 still won’t stop talking about it.

Albatross

Three strokes under par on a single hole, also called a double eagle. Rarer than a hole-in-one and about the closest thing golf has to winning the lottery.

Away

The player whose ball is farthest from the hole, and therefore the one who plays next. If someone yells “you’re away,” it’s not a compliment — it means you’re losing that hole.

Birdie

One stroke under par on a hole. It’s the reason golfers keep coming back after shooting 94 the week before.

Bogey

One stroke over par. For the recreational golfer, a bogey is basically a good score you’re not allowed to be happy about out loud.

Cup

The 4.25-inch hole in the green where the ball is supposed to end up. Famously always exactly one roll wider than wherever your putt stopped.

Double Bogey

Two strokes over par on a hole. The unofficial line where “I’m having a rough hole” becomes “let’s just pick up and move on.”

Eagle

Two strokes under par on a hole. Usually a birdie’s cooler older sibling that shows up on par 5s when you least expect it.

Flagstick

The tall pin marking the hole location from a distance so you know where to aim your next three shots. Also called the pin, the flag, or “the thing I keep hitting on chip shots but never on putts.”

Fore

The universal golf warning yelled when your ball is heading toward another human. Yell it loud, yell it early, and never be too proud to duck.

Handicap

A number representing your golfing ability that lets players of different skill levels compete fairly. In theory it measures potential; in practice it’s a deeply personal negotiation with the truth.

Hole-in-One

Sinking your tee shot in one swing. Buys you eternal bragging rights and, by unwritten law, a round of drinks for everyone in the clubhouse.

Honor

The right to tee off first, earned by having the best score on the previous hole. The only part of golf where doing well means you have to go first and everyone watches.

Marshal

The course official who keeps pace of play moving and tells your group to speed up. Universally ignored until they arrive in the cart.

Match Play

A format where you compete hole by hole rather than by total strokes — win more holes than your opponent and you win the match. A blow-up hole only costs you one hole instead of your whole scorecard, which is deeply healing.

Mulligan

A free do-over that definitely isn’t legal under the Rules of Golf but somehow appears on the first tee every Saturday morning.

Par

The number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to take on a hole. Also the number you’ll tell your coworkers you made when you actually made bogey.

Pin

Another word for the flagstick. “Pin high” means your ball finished level with the hole — right distance, wrong zip code.

Starter

The person at the first tee who organizes tee times and sends groups out. The closest thing golf has to an air traffic controller, minus the authority.

Stroke

One swing at the ball with intent to hit it. Yes, that swishing practice motion you took over the ball that accidentally moved it counts.

Stroke Play

The standard format where you count every single stroke over the round and the lowest total wins. Wonderful when you’re playing well, spiritually crushing when you’re not.

Stableford

A scoring system that awards points based on your score on each hole, so a disaster hole just means zero points instead of a ruined card. Golf’s version of being graded on effort.

Tee Time

Your reserved start time on the first tee. Arrive 30 minutes early, or arrive to a starter who has already given your slot to a twosome from Ohio.

Triple Bogey

Three strokes over par on a hole. Also known as the moment you start doing math to figure out if you can still break 90.

Golf Scoring Terms

Gross Score

Your total number of strokes before your handicap is applied — the raw, unfiltered damage. What actually happened out there.

Net Score

Your gross score minus your handicap strokes. The number that lets a 22-handicap beat a 4-handicap and feel great about it.

Medal Play

Another name for stroke play, where the lowest total score wins. “Medal” makes it sound more prestigious than the reality of counting your whiffs.

Condor

Four strokes under par on a single hole — essentially a hole-in-one on a par 5. Only a handful have ever been recorded, and most involved a very short cut across a dogleg and a lot of luck.

Ostrich

The mythical five-under-par hole, i.e. a hole-in-one on a par 6. It exists mostly as a bar-argument answer and has essentially never happened in a real round.

Phoenix

The theoretical six-under score — a one on a par 7. Pure golf folklore; you’re more likely to see an actual phoenix.

Carryover

When a hole is tied in a game and the stakes roll forward to the next hole. Great fun until six holes carry over and suddenly a $2 skin is worth your car payment.

Golf Slang Terms

Air Mail

When you fly the ball way past your target, usually over the green and into somebody’s backyard. First-class postage, zero-star landing.

Army Golf

Left, right, left, right — spraying the ball from one side to the other all the way down the hole. You cover a lot of ground and none of it is the fairway.

Banana Ball

A slice so severe the ball flight literally curves like a banana. Delicious for spectators, tragic for the person swinging.

Barkie

Making par on a hole after your ball hit a tree. Worth a bet in most groups because it combines skill, luck, and the physics of ricochet.

Breakfast Ball

A morning-round mulligan off the first tee, so named because you’re still digesting your bacon and can’t be held responsible. Basically a mulligan with a coffee.

Cart Path Assist

When your errant shot lands on the cart path and kicks forward an extra 40 yards. The universe apologizing for your swing.

Chili Dip

A fluffed chip where you hit the ground first and the ball dribbles a few sad feet forward. Named because it looks about as athletic as dipping a chip.

Dead

A situation with no good options — buried in a bush, blocked by a tree, or facing a putt you cannot possibly make. “You’re dead” is the group’s polite way of saying start walking.

Duffer

An unskilled, casual golfer who plays for the beer and the sunshine more than the score. Often the happiest person in your foursome.

Flatstick

Slang for the putter, the flattest-faced club in the bag. “The flatstick was hot today” means you made everything and are insufferable about it.

Foot Wedge

The illegal but beloved technique of improving your lie with a well-timed kick when nobody’s looking. Handicap not included.

Fried Egg

A ball half-buried in a bunker with a ring of sand around it, resembling a sunny-side-up egg. Looks cute, plays awful.

Gamer

Your trusted go-to club or ball that stays in the bag round after round. The one you’d run back into a burning house to save.

Gimmie

A short putt your playing partners agree is close enough to count without making you tap it in. Range of acceptable gimmie length expands dramatically as the round gets longer.

Hosel Rocket

A shank hit off the hosel that fires low and sideways at warp speed. See Shank and try not to think about it while reading.

Knee Knocker

A short putt — usually three to five feet — that’s just long enough to make your legs shake. Nobody’s confident, everybody’s lying about it.

Lights Out

Playing exceptionally well, like you flipped a switch and became a different golfer. Typically lasts exactly until you mention it out loud.

Member Bounce

A lucky kick off a slope or mound that funnels your ball back toward the fairway or green, as if the course is looking out for its regulars. Never happens to guests.

Sandbagger

A player who inflates their handicap to win bets and tournaments they have no business winning. The most quietly despised character at any club.

Sandy

Making par after being in a greenside bunker. Worth a bet because escaping sand and still saving par is genuinely impressive.

Snowman

Scoring an 8 on a hole, because the numeral looks like a snowman. Adorable name, brutal reality.

Stick

Both a slang term for a club and for a genuinely good player (“that guy’s a stick”). Context and jealousy will tell you which one is meant.

Texas Wedge

Using your putter from off the green, a tactic born on the wind-blown, firm courses of Texas. Ugly, unglamorous, and often the smart play. More on when to use it below.

Vanity Handicap

A handicap a golfer claims is lower than their game actually supports, purely for the ego. The opposite of a sandbagger — this person loses money proudly.

Worm Burner

A shot that screams along the ground barely getting airborne, threatening the local worm population. Sometimes runs out to a surprisingly useful spot, which only encourages the behavior.

Yips

A sudden, involuntary loss of fine motor control, usually in putting or chipping, that turns a two-foot putt into a horror movie. Part physical, mostly mental, entirely maddening.

Bandit

Like a sandbagger — a player who conceals their true ability to clean up in money games. Shows up to the member-guest with a 14 handicap and a suspiciously repeatable swing.

A-Game

Your best possible level of play, the version of you that only appears about twice a season. Usually shows up on the day you left your good camera at home.

Rock Lobster

Old-school slang for a shot that skips off a hazard or hard surface and somehow survives. A little goofy, a lot lucky.

Dead Sheep

A putt or shot with absolutely no life to it that expires well short of the target. It didn’t miss — it just gave up.

Sister-in-Law Shot

The classic locker-room line for a shot that’s “close, but not quite what you wanted.” You’ll take it, but you’re not thrilled about it.

Golf Course Terms

Apron

The closely mown grass immediately surrounding the green, slightly longer than the putting surface. The green’s welcome mat.

Bunker

A sand-filled hazard designed to punish and humble you. Rake it when you leave, because the person behind you deserves better than your footprints.

Cart Path

The paved track for golf carts winding through the course. Also an accidental trampoline that adds mysterious yardage to sliced drives.

Collar

The thin fringe of longer grass right around the edge of the green, similar to the apron. Just long enough to grab your putter and ruin the roll.

Divot

The chunk of turf your club rips out on a proper iron shot. Replace it or fill it — golf karma is real and it remembers.

Dogleg

A hole that bends left or right partway down, like a dog’s hind leg. Tempts you to cut the corner and rarely rewards the attempt.

Driving Range

The practice area where you hit a perfect bucket of balls right before playing your worst round of the month. Golf’s cruelest tease.

Fairway

The neatly mown strip of short grass between tee and green where you’re supposed to keep the ball. A place many golfers visit only as tourists.

Fairway Bunker

A sand trap out in the landing area, punishing a drive that was almost good. Requires clean contact and lowered expectations.

First Cut

The first, shorter band of rough just off the fairway. Playable, mildly annoying, and the softest landing in the rough family.

Forced Carry

A shot that must fly over a hazard — water, sand, ravine — with no bail-out option. Great for adrenaline, terrible for the golfer who just topped it.

Fringe

The short grass ringing the green, another word for the collar or apron. Close enough to putt, far enough to overthink.

Green

The smooth, closely mown putting surface where the hole lives. Where rounds are saved, ruined, and occasionally three-putted into oblivion.

Greenside Bunker

A sand trap hugging the green, guarding the pin. Get up and down from here and you’ve earned a sandy.

Hardpan

Bare, hard, compacted ground with little or no grass. Clean contact is mandatory and your wrists will feel every mistake.

Penalty Area

The modern term for water hazards and other marked trouble where you take a penalty drop. Rebranded from “hazard” but just as expensive.

Pitch Mark

The small dent your ball leaves when it lands on a soft green. Fix yours and one other — it’s the lowest-effort good deed in golf.

Practice Green

The putting green near the clubhouse for warming up your stroke. Always rolls two feet faster than the actual course greens, for maximum confusion.

Rough

The longer grass

Rough

The longer, thicker grass bordering the fairway that grabs your clubhead and eats your ambitions. The deeper you go, the more the course stops being fun.

Semi-Rough

The middle band of grass between the fairway and the deep stuff — longer than the first cut, kinder than the nasty rough. Survivable, but you’ll feel it on the clubface.

Tee Box

The flat starting area of each hole where you tee it up. The only place in golf you’re allowed to legally improve your lie, so enjoy it.

Waste Area

A large sandy or scrubby region that plays like a bunker but usually lets you ground your club and take a practice swing. The relaxed cousin of the bunker.

Water Hazard

Any pond, lake, creek, or ocean positioned exactly where your ball wants to go. Now officially called a penalty area, but your wallet feels the same either way.

Out of Bounds

Beyond the white stakes and off the course entirely, resulting in a stroke-and-distance penalty. The single most expensive real estate in golf. See the rules note below.

Collection Area

A low, closely mown hollow around a green where missed shots gather. Feels merciful until you realize you’ve got a delicate 40-foot bump coming.

False Front

The sneaky front portion of a green that slopes back toward you, rejecting shots that land short and rolling them off. Designed by an architect who wanted to watch you suffer. More in Architecture.

Terms That Make You Sound Like a Scratch Golfer

Course Management

Playing smart, percentage golf — aiming for the fat part of the green instead of every flag. The skill that separates good scores from good swings.

Dispersion

The spread pattern of where your shots actually land with a given club. Tour pros know theirs to the yard; most of us just know ours is “wide.”

FIR

Fairways in Regulation — the percentage of tee shots that finish in the short grass. A stat that’s humbling to actually track. Also in Acronyms.

Front Nine

Holes 1 through 9, also called the “out” nine. Where you build the score you’ll blow up on the back.

Back Nine

Holes 10 through 18, the “in” nine, where tournaments and Saturday bets are won and lost. The stretch that separates the confident from the exposed.

GIR

Greens in Regulation — reaching the green with enough strokes left for two putts and a par. The single best predictor of good scoring in golf. More below.

Lag Putt

A long putt you’re trying to cozy close for a stress-free tap-in rather than jam in the hole. Great lag putting is the quiet skill nobody brags about but everybody needs.

Leave

Where your shot finishes relative to the next one — “a good leave” means you’ve set up an easy follow-up. Thinking about your leave is a scratch-golfer move.

Miss Side

The safe side to miss on, away from the water, bunker, or short-side trouble. Knowing your miss side is the difference between bogey and blow-up.

Playing Away

Aiming deliberately away from the flag toward the safe part of the green. Boring, disciplined, and exactly why that person beats you.

Provisional Ball

A backup ball you hit when your first might be lost or out of bounds, played to save time. Announcing it properly is the mark of someone who knows the rules. Rules detail below.

Recovery Shot

A creative escape from trouble — punching under a tree, curving around one, or hacking out of the junk. The shots that make you feel like a genius when they work.

Scrambling

Saving par after missing the green, usually via a slick chip and a made putt. A great short game turns messy rounds into respectable scorecards.

Short Side

Missing the green on the same side as the pin, leaving almost no green to work with. The cardinal sin of approach play.

Strokes Gained

The modern stat that measures your performance against a benchmark on every shot — driving, approach, chipping, putting. It’s why “you’re losing strokes on approach” now replaces “you stink at irons.” See Acronyms.

Up and Down

Getting the ball in the hole in two shots from off the green — one to get it close, one to hole it. The bread-and-butter of every good scrambler.

Playing Through

When a faster group passes a slower one that waves them ahead. A gift of golf etiquette that’s shockingly rare in the wild.

Shot Pattern

The repeatable shape and spread your shots tend to produce. Once you own your pattern, you stop fighting your swing and start playing it.

Workability

The ability to intentionally curve the ball left or right and flight it high or low. The stuff pros use on purpose and the rest of us do by accident.

Punch Shot

A low, controlled shot played with a shorter swing to stay under wind or tree branches. Golf’s version of ducking under a doorway.

Terms the Pros Use

Apex

The highest point of the ball’s flight. Pros talk about their apex height like it’s a personality trait; you just hope yours clears the tree.

Attack Angle

Whether the clubhead is moving up or down at impact. Hit up on the driver, down on the irons — do it backwards and physics punishes you.

Ball Speed

How fast the ball leaves the clubface, the number that actually drives distance. More ball speed, more yards, more smiling at the launch monitor.

Carry Distance

How far the ball flies through the air before it lands, not counting roll. The number that matters for clearing hazards and not the one your buddy brags about.

Clubhead Speed

How fast you’re swinging the club at impact. The engine behind ball speed and the stat everyone wants to “add 10 to.”

Compression

How much the ball squashes against the face at impact, transferring energy. Good compression feels like nothing and sounds like everything.

Descent Angle

The steepness at which the ball drops onto the green. A steep descent means the ball stops fast; a shallow one means it releases and runs.

Flighted Shot

A shot hit at a controlled, often lower trajectory on purpose. Pros flight their wedges to control spin; we flight ours by accident and call it strategy.

Knockdown

A lower, controlled shot with a three-quarter swing to reduce spin and beat the wind. Cousin of the punch, favorite of ball-strikers.

Launch Angle

The angle the ball leaves the face relative to the ground. Pair it with the right spin and you’ve unlocked “optimal launch,” the holy grail of the fitting bay.

Peak Height

The maximum altitude of your ball flight, basically the apex by another name. Too low and you can’t hold greens; too high and the wind owns you.

Shot Shape

The curve of your ball flight — draw, fade, or dead straight. Every pro has a go-to shape they trust under pressure.

Smash Factor

Ball speed divided by clubhead speed — a measure of how efficiently you transferred energy. A number close to 1.5 with the driver means you flushed it.

Spin Loft

The gap between your attack angle and the clubface’s dynamic loft, which largely controls spin. The nerdy lever behind why your wedges check or run.

Spin Rate

How many revolutions per minute the ball spins in flight. Too much on the driver balloons it; too little on wedges and it won’t hold the green.

Stinger

A famously low, penetrating shot that bores through the wind and rolls forever, made legendary by Tiger Woods. Wildly satisfying to pull off, wildly hard to control. Attempt at your own risk.

Total Distance

Carry plus roll — how far the ball travels start to finish. The number worth knowing for club selection, not just for the group chat.

Ball Flight Laws

The physics governing why the ball starts and curves where it does, mostly driven by face angle and swing path. Understanding them turns “why did it do that?” into “I know exactly why it did that.”

Face-to-Path

The relationship between where the clubface points and the direction the club is swinging at impact. This one ratio explains basically every curve you’ve ever hit.

Spin Axis

The tilt of the ball’s spin that determines how much it curves left or right. Level axis, straight ball; tilted axis, welcome to your slice.

Golf Club & Equipment Terms

Blade

A thin, classic iron with a small sweet spot, favored by better players for feel and control. Beautiful to look at, unforgiving to mishit.

Bounce

The angle on a wedge’s sole that helps it glide through sand and turf instead of digging. The unsung hero of every clean bunker shot.

Cavity Back

An iron with a hollowed-out back that redistributes weight for forgiveness. The reason your mishits still get airborne.

Counterbalanced Shaft

A club with extra weight up near the grip end to steady the swing or putting stroke. Popular with putters and anyone fighting the yips.

Driver

The biggest, longest club in the bag, built to hit the ball as far as possible off the tee. Source of both your best moments and your deepest shame.

Driving Iron

A low-lofted, hard-to-hit iron used for control off the tee, popular before hybrids made life easier. A flex club as much as a golf club.

Face Angle

Where the clubface points at address — open, closed, or square. Set it wrong and your alignment is doomed before you swing.

Fairway Wood

A lofted wood used off the tee or turf for long, high shots. The 3-wood is the club everyone loves in theory and fears in practice.

Gap Wedge

A wedge filling the yardage gap between your pitching and sand wedges, usually around 50–52 degrees. Fixes the “too much club or not enough” problem.

Grind

The shaping of a wedge’s sole to suit certain turf conditions and shot types. Wedge nerds discuss grinds the way sommeliers discuss vintages.

Hybrid

A cross between an iron and a fairway wood that’s forgiving and easy to launch. The club that quietly saved millions of amateur rounds.

Lie Angle

The angle between the shaft and the sole when the club sits on the ground. Get it wrong for your body and your shots leak offline no matter how well you swing.

Lob Wedge

A high-lofted wedge (58–64 degrees) for short, steep shots that stop fast. Thrilling when it works, a chunk-or-skull coin flip when it doesn’t.

Loft

The angle of the clubface that controls how high and far the ball flies. More loft, higher and shorter; less loft, lower and longer.

Mini Driver

A smaller-headed driver, between a driver and a 3-wood, for players wanting more control off the tee. The comeback club nobody expected to like.

MOI

Moment of Inertia — a club’s resistance to twisting on off-center hits. Higher MOI means your mishits are more forgiving. See Acronyms.

Offset

When the clubhead sits slightly behind the shaft, giving you a split-second more to square the face. Helps slicers, offends purists.

Pitching Wedge

The lowest-lofted wedge, usually around 44–46 degrees, for full approach shots and pitches. The workhorse most beginners learn to trust first.

Sand Wedge

A wedge around 54–56 degrees built with bounce for escaping bunkers. Your best friend in the sand and around the greens.

Shaft Flex

How much the shaft bends during the swing — ranging from ladies to extra-stiff. The wrong flex sabotages good swings, so get fit before you get frustrated.

Sweet Spot

The center of the clubface where contact feels effortless and pure. Small, elusive, and the reason we keep swinging.

Swing Weight

How heavy the club feels when you swing it, as opposed to its actual weight on a scale. Small changes here have a surprisingly big effect on feel.

Torque

How much a shaft twists during the swing, measured in degrees. Lower torque feels stiffer and more stable; higher torque feels softer.

Utility Iron

Another name for a driving iron — a low-lofted, players-focused long iron for control and penetrating flight. Beloved by ball-strikers and links golfers.

Muscle Back

A traditional blade iron with the weight concentrated behind the sweet spot. Maximum feedback, minimum mercy.

Game Improvement Iron

A forgiving, easy-to-launch iron built to help mid-and-high handicappers. Bigger head, wider sole, happier golfer.

Players Iron

A more compact, workable iron for skilled golfers who prioritize shot-shaping over forgiveness. The bag flex of low handicaps everywhere.

Forged Iron

An iron made by pressing and shaping heated metal, prized for its soft, buttery feel. Golfers describe the feeling in tones usually reserved for fine dining.

Cast Iron

An iron made by pouring molten metal into a mold, allowing complex, forgiving shapes at lower cost. Less romantic than forged, easier on the wallet and the mishits.

Golf Swing & Ball-Striking Terms

Chunk

Hitting the ground well before the ball, sending a divot farther than your shot. Also called a fat shot, and always a little embarrassing.

Double Cross

When you aim to curve the ball one way and it curves the other, usually with disastrous results. You planned for a fade, got a hook, and now you’re in the trees on the wrong side.

Draw

A controlled shot that curves gently from right to left for a right-handed golfer. The shape most amateurs chase and most pros use to add distance. More below.

Fade

A controlled shot that curves gently from left to right for a righty. Soft, reliable, and famously the shape that “doesn’t visit the bad rooms.” More below.

Fat Shot

Same as a chunk — turf first, ball second, distance nowhere. Your hands feel it and your scorecard feels it more.

Flush

Perfect center-face contact where the ball feels like it wasn’t even there. The feeling that keeps you playing this maddening game.

Heel Strike

Contact toward the heel of the club, near the hosel, robbing you of distance and flirting with a shank. One millimeter from disaster.

Hook

A shot that curves hard from right to left for a righty, more aggressive than a draw. Fun to watch, terrifying to own.

Pull

A straight shot that starts and stays left of your target for a righty. No curve, just wrong the whole way.

Push

A straight shot that starts and stays right of your target for a righty. The pull’s mirror-image twin.

Pure

To strike a shot absolutely perfectly — “I pured it.” The verb form of flush and the highlight of most amateur rounds.

Shank

The most feared word in golf. A shot hit off the hosel that rockets sideways and immediately destroys confidence. More below.

Slice

A shot that curves hard from left to right for a righty, usually unintentionally. The most common ball flight in amateur golf and the reason range lessons exist.

Skull

Blading the ball across its middle so it screams low and hot over the green. Your wedge’s revenge for a decelerating swing.

Thin

Catching the ball too high on the face, producing a low, stingy shot. Not as fat as a chunk, not as clean as a flush — just disappointing.

Toe Strike

Contact out toward the toe of the club, killing distance and often curving the shot. Feels dead and sounds worse.

Top

Striking the very top of the ball so it dribbles along the ground. The beginner’s classic, and still a nightmare visitor for veterans.

Push Fade

A shot that starts right and curves further right for a righty. Two rights that definitely make a wrong.

Push Draw

A shot that starts right of target and draws back toward it. When intentional, it’s a pro move; when accidental, it’s a happy surprise.

Pull Hook

A shot that starts left and hooks even further left. The snap-hook’s angry cousin and a fast track to the next fairway over.

Pull Slice

Over-the-Top

The most common amateur swing fault, where the club moves out and across on the downswing, producing slices and pulls. The root cause of a thousand banana balls.

Inside-Out Swing

A swing path that travels from inside the target line to outside it, promoting a draw. What every slicer is desperately trying to feel.

Outside-In Swing

A path that cuts across the ball from outside to in, the classic slice-and-pull producer. The move your instructor keeps trying to fix.

Casting

Releasing the wrist angle too early in the downswing, throwing away power like casting a fishing rod. Costs you speed and consistency in one motion.

Early Extension

Standing up and thrusting your hips toward the ball through impact, wrecking your posture and contact. A very common fault and a very stubborn one to fix.

Terms for Great Golf Shots

Dart

A crisp iron shot that flies straight at the flag and stops close. “Throwing darts” means your iron game is on and everyone’s jealous.

Drained It

Making a putt, especially a long or clutch one. The ball vanishes and so does your composure.

Flag Hunting

Aiming straight at the pin instead of the safe part of the green. High risk, high reward, and high drama.

Holed It

Sinking a shot from off the green — a chip, pitch, or bunker shot that goes straight in. The kind of moment you’ll retell for a decade.

Kick-In

A putt so short it’s basically a form ality, close enough to nudge in with one hand. Slightly longer than a tap-in, still a gimmie in most groups.

Knocked It Stiff

Hitting an approach so close to the hole the next putt is a tap-in. “Stiff” as in it stopped right by the stick.

Laser

A dead-straight, perfectly struck shot flying right at the target. Also what you feel like after actually flushing one.

Pinned It

Landing your approach right next to the pin. Cousin of “knocked it stiff,” equally worth y of a fist pump.

Pured It

Striking the ball flawlessly off the sweet spot. The feeling you spend $60 a bucket at the range chasing.

Stuffed

Sticking an approach shot right next to the hole. “Stuffed it to a foot” is the highest form of on-course bragging.

Stripe Show

Hitting one gorgeous, towering shot after another. When someone’s putting on a stripe show, just enjoy the view and keep quiet.

Tap-In

A putt so short you can knock it in without marking. The most stress-free stroke in golf — unless you get cute and lip it out.

Center Cut

A putt that drops dead in the middle of the cup, or a drive split right down the fairway. No drama, all confidence.

Clutch

Coming through under pressure — draining the putt or striping the drive exactly when it matters most. The trait every golfer wishes they had more of.

Nipped It

Catching a wedge shot cleanly off a tight lie, pinching the ball first with just the right touch. The mark of a confident short game.

Painted It

Curving a shot perfectly around trouble and back to your target, as if you painted the ball flight in the air. Shot-shaping at its most satisfying.

Money Ball

The clutch shot hit exactly when the bet or the match is on the line. Comes through and suddenly you’re buying drinks with your winnings.

Terms for Bad Golf Shots

Block

A shot pushed dead right (for a righty) when the hands fail to release through impact. Usually shows up on the exact hole with water right.

Cold Top

A badly topped shot that barely moves, dribbling off the tee in front of everyone. Golf’s most public humiliation.

Dead Pull

A shot yanked straight left of target with no curve to save it. Aimed at the flag, arrived at the neighbor’s yard.

Duck Hook

A low, violent hook that dives hard left and drops fast, like a duck shot out of the sky. Panic-inducing and hard to unsee.

Flare Slice

A weak shot that leaks high and short to the right, losing serious distance. The slice’s feeble little sibling.

Snap Hook

A sudden, sharp hook that curves left almost immediately off the face. The kind of miss that ends a good round in one swing.

Whiff

Swinging and missing the ball entirely — and yes, it still counts as a stroke. The most demoralizing zero-yard shot in the game.

Shank

Here it is again, because it deserves its own nightmare. Struck off the hosel, the ball squirts sharp right and your confidence leaves the county. See our swing entry for the full horror.

Hosel Rocket

The shank’s meaner nickname — a screaming, low, sideways missile off the hosel. Say it three times and you’ll do it, so we won’t.

Chunk

The bad-shot version: turf first, ball goes nowhere, and your playing partners go silent out of respect. Distance lost, dignity dented.

Thin

The bad-shot flavor: caught too high on the face, sent screaming low and long past your target. Especially cruel on delicate chips.

Top

Clipping the top of the ball so it rolls pathetically forward. Somehow feels worse than a total whiff because you technically hit it.

Chili Dip

A chunked chip that flops a couple of feet and stops. Named for its resemblance to sadly dipping a chip that then breaks in the salsa.

Skull

Blading a short shot so it flies flat and hot across the green into whatever’s waiting on the other side. Your wedge’s way of saying “commit next time.”

Balloon Ball

A shot that launches way too high with too much spin and falls short like a popped balloon. Costs you 30 yards and a lot of pride into the wind.

Funny Golf Terms

Snowman

An 8 on a single hole, because the number looks like a little snowman. The only snowman that ruins your day instead of making it.

Fried Egg

A ball plugged in a bunker with a sandy ring around it, like an egg cooking in the trap. Breakfast never looked so unappetizing.

Barkie

A par made after your ball rattled through a tree. You didn’t earn it, but you’ll absolutely collect on the bet.

Sandy

Saving par from a bunker — the funny name for a genuinely clutch escape. Bonus points for doing it after skulling one in there first.

Camel

Slang for a bumpy, humped, or badly maintained lie or green with too many undulations. You didn’t hit a bad putt — the camel did.

Air Biscuit

A cheeky term for a shot that sails uselessly into the air with no distance, or occasionally something rather less printable in the cart. Either way, nobody claims it.

Army Golf

Left, right, left, right — marching your ball down the hole one wild miss at a time. Great c ardio, terrible scoring.

Worm Burner

A shot that sizzles along the turf endangering the worms below. Occasionally scoots out to a decent spot, which is how the legend survives.

Cart Path Assist

A wayward drive that bangs off the cart path and rockets forward. The one time hitting a hazard pays off.

Mickledick

A prick with two thumbs and tarnished legacy; the greatest flopper of all time.

Foot Wedge

The most reliable club in the bag — your shoe, discreetly nudging the ball to a better lie. Never misses, never legal.

Breakfast Ball

A first-tee do-over granted because the round hasn’t really started yet. The mulligan’s morning-friendly alias.

Dead Sheep

A limp shot or putt with zero energy that flops down short and lifeless. It didn’t miss so much as pass away.

Rock Lobster

A ball that skips off water or a hard surface and somehow survives to play another shot. Ninety percent luck, ten percent physics, one hundred percent a great story.

Sister-in-Law Shot

The classic clubhouse line for a shot that’s “close, but not what you really wanted.” You’ll take it — with mixed feelings.

Golf Gambling Terms

Nassau

The classic three-part bet: one wager on the front nine, one on the back, one on the overall 18. It’s really three matches in one, which is why a “$5 Nassau” somehow costs you $15.

Skins

A game where each hole is worth a set amount, and you have to win the hole outright to claim it. Tie the hole and the money carries over, which is how one great shot on 18 wins the whole pot.

Wolf

A rotating game where one player (the Wolf) picks a partner off the tee or goes solo for bigger points. Equal parts strategy, ego, and betrayal.

Bingo Bango Bongo

Three points per hole: first on the green, closest to the pin once all are on, and first to hole out. Rewards order of play as much as skill, so even a hacker can cash in.

Greenie

A bet won by hitting the green closest to the pin on a par 3 — and usually you must make par to keep it. Miss the putt and watch your greenie evaporate.

Poley

A side bet for sinking a putt from outside the flagstick’s length (a “pole”). Encourages you to actually make the knee-knocker instead of babying it.

Junk

Catch-all term for the little bonus bets — greenies, sandies, barkies, and the rest. The side action that turns a $5 round into a $40 lesson.

Garbage

Another name for junk — the pile of small achievement bets running alongside the main game. Where the real money quietly changes hands.

Dot Game

A points-based game where you earn or lose “dots” for various feats and flubs throughout the round. Simple to track on a scorecard, dangerous to your wallet.

Press

A new, additional bet started mid-match when you’re losing, usually to double your chances of getting even. The gambling equivalent of “let me try that again, but for more money.”

Auto Press

A press that kicks in automatically once you fall a set number of holes behind — typically two down. Keeps the match alive and the losses compounding.

Hammer

A game where either side can “throw the hammer” to double the stakes at any time, and the other must accept or forfeit. A test of nerve as much as golf.

Vegas

A team game where partners’ scores are combined into a two-digit number rather than added, so a 4 and a 5 becomes 45. Blow-up holes here are catastrophic and hilarious.

Snake

A running bet where whoever three-putts last holds the “snake” and owes the pot. Nobody wants to be caught holding it on 18.

Rabbit

A game where you “catch the rabbit” by winning a hole outright and hold it until someone else does. Whoever has the rabbit at the end of a nine collects.

Banker

A format where one player each hole acts as the banker, betting individually against everyone else in the group. Great for uneven-sized groups and lopsided grudges.

Golf Drinks & Cart Girl Terms

Birdie Juice

Any alcoholic drink credited with “helping” your game once the swing thoughts finally quiet down. Effectiveness peaks around beer two and declines sharply after that.

Cart Girl

The staffer who drives the beverage cart around the course selling drinks and snacks. Arrives like a mirage on the 7th hole exactly when you need her.

Beverage Cart

The roving refreshment vehicle stocked with drinks, snacks, and salvation. Its faint engine hum is the sweetest sound in golf.

Bloody Mary

The unofficial breakfast cocktail of early tee times, equal parts hydration and denial. Counts as a vegetable in most golfing jurisdictions.

Fireball Hole

A designated hole where the group takes a ceremonial shot of Fireball before teeing off. Traditionally the point where scores and decision-making both go downhill.

Nineteenth Hole

The clubhouse bar, where the real round is discussed and every bad shot gets slowly rewritten into a good one. The most popular hole on any course.

Swing Oil

Affectionate slang for whatever beverage loosens up your swing. Apply generously, but remember the back nine still has to happen.

Transfusion

The beloved course cocktail of vodka, ginger ale, and grape juice, garnished with a lime. Refreshing, dangerously easy to drink, and a par-saver in its own right.

Turn Dog

The hot dog you inhale at the turn between nines. A sacred golf tradition and, statistically, the best-tasting food on earth after nine holes in the sun.

Clubhouse & Golf Facility Terms

Bag Drop

The spot near the clubhouse where you unload your clubs before parking. Roll up, drop the bag, tip the attendant, and feel like a tour pro for ten seconds.

Caddie

The person who carries your bag, reads greens, and gently talks you out of hitting driver into the water. Part guide, part therapist, part gambling consultant.

Caddie Master

The person who manages the caddie program and pairs loopers with players. The keeper of who’s good, who’s available, and who reads a green like a book.

Club Championship

The annual tournament crowning the best player at a course. Bragging rights last a full year and, for some members, an entire lifetime.

Clubhouse

The central building housing the pro shop, dining, locker rooms, and post-round storytelling. Command center for everything that isn’t actually golf.

Grill Room

The casual clubhouse restaurant where rounds are relived over burgers and beers. Where the day’s biggest fish stories are caught and released.

Halfway House

The snack stop between the ninth and tenth holes serving food, drinks, and a bathroom break. The oasis that resets your round and your blood sugar.

Locker Room

Where members store their shoes and belongings and change before and after rounds. Also the unofficial headquarters of golf gossip.

Member-Guest

A popular tournament where members invite a guest to team up for a weekend of golf, food, and gambling. The social event of the club calendar.

Practice Facility

The range, short-game area, and putting greens where you sharpen your game — or at least intend to. Nicer facilities somehow correlate with fewer people actually practicing.

Pro Shop

The retail shop selling clubs, apparel, balls, and tee times. Where “I just need a sleeve of balls” turns into a $200 receipt and a new glove.

PGA Tour & Tournament Terms

Alternate List

The waiting list of players ready to fill a field spot if someone withdraws. Golf’s version of standby, minus the airport snacks.

Cut Line

The score you must beat after two rounds to keep playing the weekend and earn a paycheck. Land on the wrong side and it’s an early flight home.

FedExCup

The PGA Tour’s season-long points race that culminates in the playoffs and a massive bonus. The reason “points” gets mentioned roughly 400 times per broadcast.

Featured Group

A marquee pairing given its own dedicated broadcast coverage. Usually the biggest names, the most cameras, and the tightest tee-shot nerves.

Korn Ferry Tour

The PGA Tour’s official development circuit, the last stop before the big leagues. Grind well here and you earn your Tour card. See below.

Monday Qualifier

A one-day, all-or-nothing event where a few open spots in the week’s tournament are up for grabs. Brutal, low-scoring, and heartbreak by lunchtime.

OWGR

The Official World Golf Ranking, the global measuring stick of who’s playing best. Ranks matter for major invites and eternal bar arguments. Also in Acronyms.

Pairings

The official groupings and tee times for each round. Checking the pairings sheet is every fan’s morning ritual during tournament week.

Playoff

Extra holes played to break a tie at the end of regulation. Sudden, dramatic, and occasionally decided by someone finding the water on the 72nd hole first.

Purse

The total prize money paid out to the field. When you hear “$20 million purse,” the winner’s cut alone is life-changing money.

Q-School

Qualifying School, the gauntlet of tournaments where players earn status on Tour. Famous for its pressure, its heartbreak, and its career-launching magic.

Signature Event

A premium PGA Tour event with a limited field, no cut, and an enormous purse. Where the stars gather and the appearance money is very good.

Sponsor Exemption

A field spot handed out at a tournament’s discretion, often to a young star, a local favorite, or a fan draw. It’s how careers sometimes get their first real break.

Sudden Death

A playoff format where the first player to win a hole outright takes the title. Maximum drama, minimum patience.

Exemption Category

The specific reason a player is exempt into events — past wins, ranking, money list, and so on. The bureaucratic backbone of who gets to tee it up.

Tour Card

The membership that grants a player full access to compete on a tour. The single most coveted piece of plastic in professional golf.

Ryder Cup & Match Play Terms

All Square

When a match is tied, with neither side up. Abbreviated “AS” on the scoreboard and the tensest two letters in team golf.

Captain’s Pick

A player chosen for a team by the captain rather than automatically qualifying. Get picked and you’d better justify the faith on Sunday.

Concession

Giving your opponent a short putt or the hole without making them finish. A gesture of sportsmanship — or strategy, depending on the moment.

Dormie

When a player leads a match by exactly as many holes as remain, so they can’t lose — only win or tie. The best possible spot to be in match play.

Four-Ball

A format where two-player teams each play their own ball and count the lower score per hole. Aggressive golf, because someone can always go for it.

Foursomes

Alternate shot — two players share one ball, taking turns hitting it. The format most likely to test a friendship.

Halved Hole

A hole tied between opponents, so no one wins it. In match play, a halve can feel like a win or a gut-punch depending on the putt that caused it.

Singles

One-on-one match play, the format for the final day of the Ryder Cup. Twelve individual duels, one team title on the line.

Team Room

The private space where a team gathers, strategizes, and bonds during a competition. What happens in the team room becomes legend later.

Alternate Shot

Another name for foursomes, where teammates alternate hitting the same ball. One great drive followed by one skulled wedge is the format’s signature heartbreak.

Terms Tied to PGA Tour Golfers

The Big Cat

A nickname for Tiger Woods, golf’s most dominant and famous player. Also occasionally borrowed for any player on a ferocious run.

Golden Bear

Jack Nicklaus, winner of a record 18 professional majors and the benchmark every great player is measured against. The logo, the legend, the standard.

Mickeldick

The most famous left-handed golfer in the game (who’s actually right-handed off the course). Beloved for his flop shots, fearless gambles, and a toasted legacy.

The King

Arnold Palmer, the charismatic legend who made golf popular for the masses. His fans were “Arnie’s Army” and his iced-tea-and-lemonade drink still bears his name.

Career Grand Slam

Winning all four professional majors over the course of a career — the Masters, PGA, U.S. Open, and Open Championship. A club so exclusive only a handful of players have ever joined it.

Hall of Famer

A player enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame for a legendary career. The ultimate lifetime achievement stamp in the sport.

Journeyman

A steady, hard-working pro who grinds out a career without ever becoming a superstar. The backbone of every Tour field and a fan favorite for it.

Presidents Cupper

A player selected for the Presidents Cup, the biennial team event pitting the U.S. against an International squad (minus Europe). A résumé badge of honor.

Rookie

A player in their first full season on Tour. Wide-eyed, hungry, and one hot week away from becoming a household name.

Ryder Cupper

A player who has represented their side in the Ryder Cup, golf’s most intense team rivalry. Making the team is a career-defining honor — and the pressure to match.

Golf Acronyms

DQ

Disqualified — removed from the tournament for a rules breach, usually an incorrect scorecard or an illegal club. The scarlet letter of golf.

DNS

Did Not Start — a player who was in the field but never teed off. Injury, illness, or a very bad morning.

FIR

Fairways in Regulation — the percentage of drives that find the short grass. A humbling stat once you start honestly counting. See the scratch-golfer section.

GIR

Greens in Regulation — reaching the green with two putts to spare for par. The strongest single indicator of good scoring. More in the FAQ.

LIV

LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed circuit that shook up professional golf with team events and no cuts. The Roman numeral for 54, the number of holes in its events.

LPGA

The Ladies Professional Golf Association, the premier women’s professional tour. Home to some of the best ball-strikers on the planet.

MC

Missed Cut — failing to make the weekend after two rounds. Two letters no pro wants next to their name.

MDF

Made Cut, Did not Finish — when a large field is trimmed a second time after the cut. A confusing status that basically means “you made it but still went home early.”

OWGR

Official World Golf Ranking, the global order of merit. Determines major eligibility and settles a lot of “who’s better” debates. More in Tour terms.

PGA

Professional Golfers’ Association — and, in the U.S., shorthand for the PGA Tour. The biggest brand in men’s professional golf.

SG

Strokes Gained — the analytics stat measuring performance versus a benchmark on every shot. It’s how the modern game quantifies exactly where you’re bleeding shots. See the scratch section.

USGA

The United States Golf Association, the game’s governing body in the U.S. that writes the rules and runs the U.S. Open. The keepers of golf’s rulebook and its hardest setups.

WD

Withdrew — pulling out of a tournament mid-event, usually due to injury. Different from a DQ, equally disappointing.

R&A

The Royal and Ancient, golf’s governing body outside the U.S. and Mexico, and the organizer of The Open Championship. The USGA’s partner in ruling the game worldwide.

Course Architecture Terms

Biarritz

A template par 3 featuring a deep swale running through the middle of a long green. Named after the French course where it originated, and a nightmare when the pin’s on the far shelf.

Cape Hole

A hole that bends around a hazard, tempting you to bite off as much of the corner as you dare. The more you risk, the shorter your approach — if you pull it off.

Collection Area

A low, closely mown hollow that gathers missed shots around a green. Merciful in that you avoid the rough, cruel in the fiddly chip it leaves.

Crowned Green

A green that’s higher in the middle and falls away on all sides, repelling anything but a well-struck shot. Hit the center or watch it trickle off.

Double Green

One enormous green shared by two different holes, made famous by the Old Course at St Andrews. Putts here can be a full sand-wedge distance long.

False Front

The front section of a green that slopes back toward the fairway, rejecting shots that land just short. The architect’s polite way of demanding one more club.

Plateau Green

A green raised up on a tabletop, so a shot even slightly short falls away down the slope. Demands precise distance control and punishes the timid.

Principal’s Nose

A cluster of bunkers sitting right in the middle of a fairway, forcing a choice of which side to play. A classic strategic hazard named after a famously large-nosed schoolmaster.

Punchbowl Green

A green set in a natural depression, with surrounding slopes that funnel balls toward the center. One of the few designs that actually helps your ball find the middle.

Redan

A famous template par 3 with a green angled away and sloping from front-right to back-left, guarded by a deep bunker. The most copied hole design in golf.

Risk-Reward Hole

A hole that offers a big payoff for an aggressive play and a big penalty for failure — usually a reachable par 5 or a drivable par 4. Where tournaments swing and egos get exposed.

Template Hole

A hole modeled on a classic, time-tested design like the Redan or Biarritz. Golf’s greatest hits, recreated on courses around the world.

Rules & Etiquette Terms

Embedded Ball

A ball plugged into its own pitch mark in the ground, which under modern rules usually earns you free relief. One of the rare breaks golf actually gives you.

Etiquette

The unwritten code of conduct — repair your marks, stay quiet on backswings, keep pace, and always yell “fore” when your ball threatens someone. Follow it and you’ll be welcome anywhere; ignore it and word travels fast.

Free Relief

Moving your ball without penalty from an abnormal condition like a cart path, sprinkler head, or casual water. Golf’s version of a freebie — take it correctly.

Lost Ball

A ball you can’t find within the three-minute search limit, resulting in a stroke-and-distance penalty. Time it, because the clock is not on your side.

Out of Bounds

Ground beyond the course boundary, marked by white stakes, that costs you stroke and distance. Always hit a provisional if there’s any doubt — it saves the walk back.

Pace of Play

How quickly your group moves around the course. Play “ready golf,” keep up with the group ahead, and you’ll be everyone’s favorite playing partner.

Preferred Lies

A local rule allowing you to lift, clean, and place your ball in the fairway when conditions are poor. Also known as winter rules — a seasonal mercy.

Provisional Ball

A second ball played when your first might be lost or out of bounds, to save the trek back to the tee. Announce it clearly as “provisional,” or it becomes your ball in play.

Raking Bunkers

Smoothing the sand with the rake after you play, so the next golfer gets a clean lie. Leave it neat — footprints are how you make enemies.

Ready Golf

Playing when you’re ready rather than strictly by who’s away, to speed things up. Now actively encouraged in casual play, and your marshal will thank you.

Repairing Pitch Marks

Fixing the dents balls leave on greens with a tool or tee. Fix yours and one more — it takes five seconds and keeps the greens rolling true.

Winter Rules

Another name for preferred lies, used when the course is wet or worn. A cold-weather courtesy that lets you clean and place your ball.

Unplayable Lie

When you declare your ball impossible to play and take a one-stroke penalty for relief. You’re the sole judge — sometimes discretion really is the better part of a good score.

Ground Under Repair

An area of the course being maintained, marked so you can take free relief. Look for the white lines or “GUR” and take your break.

Casual Water

Temporary water on the course, like a puddle after rain, that isn’t a designated hazard. You get free relief — no need to splash through it.
