Mito Pereira, our 2nd favorite Chilean on Tour, pulls a van de Velde on 18 — ouch!
Early last week, we picked Justin Thomas to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.
I guess we’re like the golf version of Nostradamus (in our own minds), because he did just that, in grand fashion having slain 13, 17, 18 in a three-hole playoff. He could not have played better in extra time, and even though Zalatoris played well, he was no match. No one would have been.
As good as JT played in the playoff, Mito delivered the dead opposite result on his final hole of the tourney.
Ouch. Seriously, nervy ouch.
He could have missed his drive a mile left and still made bogey. But instead, he made arguably his worse swing of the week and found the creek on the right of 18 with his tee shot.
That swing will haunt him forever, but Mito is gooooooood, and will win multiple trophies on Tour in the next handful of years. He’s got a well-rounded game and it wouldn’t surprise us to see him contend a couple more times this year, including at one of the final majors of the season.
Also, his name leaped up the board to be selected to the international side for the Presidents Cup to be played later this fall at Quail Hollow.
Back to JT. Stud.
JT’s 2nd major victory–which was his 15th win on Tour–had to have sealed his future place in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Good for him. His action and mojo never gets old.
