Hitting 17 out of 18 greens in a major on a Sunday — that’s crazy talk. Thanks to the 2022 U.S. Open Champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, we got to witness it all. Sunday was a great day for watching professional golf on TV, or, if you were lucky enough, in-person in Brookline, Mass. with 50k+ frenzied fans of golf.
During the final round yesterday, the lead and the emotions tied to the final 18 holes shifted primarily between three men: Scottie Scheffler, Will Zalatoris and eventual winner, Matt Fitzpatrick. All three are pretty good players. They might each play on tour for the next 3,5, hell, who are we kidding, 25 years…
Other than Sunday’s big three, Rory had his moments but played up and down throughout the day. Hideki fired the round of the tourney, -5 on Sunday, but his late charge came up 3-strokes short. Others made their sponsors happy with some TV time, but this tourney was a three-man race from the start and it was a doozy.
If you were taking a snooze and missed Fitz’s fairway bunker shot on 18 to help seal his victory, watch this a few times. This is good shi*
In the end, Zalatoris had a 20-ft putt to tie Fitz and head to a playoff, but it wasn’t meant to be. For the 2nd straight major, he came up just short in 2nd place. Ouch. At least he made a few greenbacks ($1.557M to be exact) to help ease the mental strife.
Rest assured, in addition to getting rich along the way, Will Z. someday will have a trophy case filled with a handful of the big ones, and winning a U.S. Open is definitely doable as long as he keeps working diligently on his putting. From tee to green, he’s a top-5 player in the world. On the green, he and Rory are fighting it out for who can get the least out of the amazing shots they are pulling off on the weekends in majors.
Congrats to Matt. Well played young man. In 2013 he won the U.S. Amateur in Brookline. In 2022, on the same course, The C.C., he won a gold medal, $3.15M, and a big ass trophy with ‘U.S. Open Champion’ engraved on it. Boom diggity.
