Yesterday afternoon Viktor Hovland, the 25-year-old, 5-time winner on the PGA Tour, former Oklahoma State Cowboy with the boyish good looks and Superman-esque over-the-top looping backswing J.Linderberg wild-striped wearing youngin’ went on a good ol’ fashioned heater on the back nine at Olympia Fields just outside of Chicago in the BMW Championship. When he woke up from the golf dream of his career, he had shot a backnine 28, set a course record 61 (the course is 108 years old), and had won the 2nd to last FedEx Cup Playoff event of the 2022-2023 season by 2 shots. His worst score on the back nine was a 4. And he only shot it once.
How did the heater of all heaters impact his bank account you might wonder? After lifting the Big-A on the 18th green, his business manager with a single tear rolling down his right cheek whispered into Viktor’s ear, ” I just made $360,000!” In other words, the heater made a bunch of people richer — caddie, coach, chef, pilot, and business managers included.
Crazy cash season is still in full swing. Viktor banked $3.6M; Scheffler and Baby Face both pocketed $1.8M, and Taylor Moore, who came in DFL, limped home with $68k after shooting +18, which was 35 more strokes than Viktor shot over 4 days, an average of 9 strokes per round. NINE STROKES PER ROUND. How about them apples?
The final crazy cash payout of the PGA Tour season takes place Sunday at East Lake. A LIV tourney or two will follow soon after. But for 30 guys who stayed loyal to Monahan & clan, or who just didn’t get a Golf Saudi invite, each will fly home mostly content with a minimum $500,000 check. Cha-ching. Cha-ching. Cha-thank you FedEx and all of the other corporate sponsors and media partners of the PGA Tour-ching!
