When Brian Harman won the John Deere in 2014, his first PGA Tour victory, he took home $800k. Yesterday, after lifting the Big-A Claret Jug, he pocketed nearly 4x as much, settling in at a cool $3M (before crazy taxes).
With the victory, Harman has now won over $30M on Tour. Not bad for a journeyman, who before yesterday had only won twice previously during his 10+ years on tour. The purse for this year’s Open Championship was nearly 2x what the big boys played for as recently as 2016. I keep hearing that golf is a popular sport, but damn; PIF’s $$$ influence on golf is paying off. These guys are playing for big cheese these days.
Even if you shot a bazillion at Hoylake and missed the cut (we’re looking at you JT), the R&A still laid out a min. $8,500 per player for making the field and teeing it up. Now, that didn’t cover JT’s expenses, but it did for others; and the full-field payments were a nice gesture, especially for the up-and-comers and lower-tier players who qualified.
The R&A announced that the total prize fund for the 2023 Open was $16.5 million, an 18 percent increase from a year ago and nearly double the purse from 2016. Cha-ching.
