At one time or another, we have all played golf in what surely felt like gale-force winds.
In addition to the tips that Jerry shares below, we have three primary best practices we follow when getting whipped around by Mother Nature out on the links.
- Take at least one more club than what you think you should hit. For example, if you normally hit a 7-iron 140 yards in calm conditions, and you feel like hitting a 5-iron is the right club into a 35-mile-an-hour wind, choke down and hit a smooth 4-iron. Throw away any ego you have tied to how far you hit it when playing in windy/gusty conditions.
- Swing 3/4 speed. Overswinging is the WORST THING YOU CAN DO IN THE WIND. The harder you swing, the more spin you impart on the ball. More spin = off-the-planet shots.
- Lower your expectations, a lot. Enjoy the challenge of playing in tougher conditions. Just know going in you will shoot a higher-than-average score and that is ok.
