Ludvig Åberg brought his big boy pants Sunday to Torrey Pines.
The Swedish Stud was on fire Sunday, torching Torrey Pines’ South Course with a final-round 66 to snag his second PGA Tour victory. It was fitting that Top Gunner Mav McNealy, who finished one stroke back of Ludvig, played lights out Sunday in the backyard of where the Navy’s TOPGUN program used to be based.
Meanwhile, the Tiger Woods event again went on without well… Tiger Woods. With his mom’s passing only a couple of weeks before the event was to tee off, Tiger recused his spot in the field. At least we get to see him rip it and chip it during TGL matches every few weeks. We miss you, Tiger!
As for the loot, Ludvig Åberg walked away with a fat $4 million check—enough to buy a small island or, at the very least, a lifetime supply of IKEA meatballs. (Do you like what we did there?)
Speaking of islands, McNealy’s not exactly scrounging for gas money either, pocketing $2.2 million for his efforts Sunday. McNealy started his professional career with a nice foundation of family cash, so he’ll never have to worry about the pitfalls bestowed on players who fail to keep their PGA TOUR cards. Mav’s dad, Scott McNealy, founded 90’s stock darling Sun Microsystems. Let’s just say that Tiger Woods isn’t the only player on tour who’s had a driving range in his backyard.
The players aren’t complaining about these Signature event paydays—winning at Torrey paid more than double what champs took home at the Sony, American Express, Farmers, and Waste Management earlier this season.
Winners & Losers from Sunday’s Final Round at Torrey Pines:
- Winners: Ludvig & Maverick – respectively, those two shot the 2nd best (66) and top score (64) for the day Sunday. Closers close on Sundays, and those two hit fairways and greens and absolutely lit it up. Mostly keeping pace, Scheff also fired a 66 to tie Ludvig’s Sunday round and finish up T-3.
- Loser: Davis Thompson held the lead for a good part of Saturday but struggled mightily to finish the tourney. He played the weekend in 4-over par, dropping down to T-13. Ouch.
- Winner: Canadian Corey Conners made the biggest jump Sunday, 18 spots on the leaderboard while posting a final round 67. Good enough to finish up T-24.
- Loser: Nico Echavarria lost the most ground Sunday, dropping 26 spots. His lackluster 3-over 75 cost him an estimated $400k. That’s not chump change, even Richy Rich McNealy.
- Losers: The 18 guys who never even had a chance to play on the weekend, led by the likes of Rose, Hovland, Spieth, and Homa. Even though the Genesis is a Signature event, it’s one of three Sigs with a cut. In contrast, each of the other regular season events that fall into that category (just below the Players, which is just below the Majors), feature no cuts. It pays to play in the Sigs, but not for those who shit the bed Thurs/Fri.
