At the onset of the ’25 Masters tourney, the players knew big money was to be won. But the money pocketed yesterday by everyone in the field—including those who missed the cut—was not what the participants were most focused on. They wanted to win a green jacket and become immortal Masters champions. But money does pay the bills and for his efforts, Rory took home $4.2M, leaving him at $104,246,906 earned over his career (#2 all-time behind the GOAT); runner-up Justin Rose took home $2.3M, leaving him at $68,933,517 for his career, good enough for 8th place all-time. Four players earned more than $1M in this year’s event, and 11 in total earned more than $500k. One green jacket was earned, but a lot of golfers padded their already-bloated bank accounts.
Winners & Losers from Sunday at the Masters:
- Loser: Ludvig – He had a put to take the lead the final round on 16. He missed it and went on to bogey 17 and triple 18. Assuming he birdies 16 and pars 17 and 18, he would have finished solo 3rd and won $1.4M. Instead, he blew a flat and took home $800k. Don’t get me wrong, $800k is still a nice number – but not nearly as nice as where his final payout was headed.
- Loser: Corey Conners – His play on the back nine Sunday let him down, finishing 3-over for the day. We expected him to keep pace with the other leaders, but he just couldn’t do it. His slip-up cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars and certainly confidence in his game that he’ll need to rebuild. He’s a good player teetering on becoming a great player. As we all know, and certainly Corey, great players don’t shoot 39 on the back nine of a major championship while in contention.
- Winner: Patrick “The Cheat” Reed. His dunk for a 2 on 17 was money. That unexpected shot and result at that time in the tourney earned him an additional $1M or so.
- Winner: Zach Johnson – He was 7-under on the weekend and finished T-8. We didn’t see this result coming. And neither did he by the way he was reacting to his play on Saturday. Good for him.
- Winner: Rory. With his rocky road victory, the monkey is now off his back. Thankfully, none of us need to think about it again until we read his autobiography.
