Even though Brian Campbell took home $1.26M for his win yesterday in the Mexico Open, he might want to buy a lottery ticket after his absurdly lucky break on his way to winning in extra time.
Standing on the 18th tee for the third time in about an hour, Campbell took his swing—only to watch his golf ball veer off course like a rogue shopping cart with a broken wheel. His drive struck awkwardly off the heel, took a hard right turn mid-air, and was last seen hurtling it’s way back to the states.
On the PGA Tour broadcast, on-course analyst Smylie Kaufman (we love this guy!) immediately clocked the disaster, noting how low and right the shot was going. That was quickly followed by a concerned, “This is dicey!” as the ball torpedoed toward a leafy demise.
Enter Notah Begay III, who stated the obvious: Campbell’s ball was “going to need a good bounce…”
And just like that, the golf gods delivered.
Winners & Losers from Sunday’s Final Round in Mexico:
- Winner/Loser: After slap-shanking his drive wide right on the 2nd playoff hole, Brian Campbell watched his ball magically carom back into play. That good break for Brian and bad, bad break for Aldrich, was a life-changing time warp. Each guy in the playoff was contending for PGA TOUR victory #1, a check for more than $1 million dollars, a spot in the Masters, Signature event invites, and so much more.
- Winner: Joel Dahmen has had an interesting start to his season. He’s missed more cuts than he’s made (3 to 2), but in the two tourneys he’s played the weekend, he’s posted top 10s. Yesterday, he climbed six spots on the leaderboard to finish T-6 after posting a final round 6-under 65, which was good enough for a healthy $250k payday.
- Other: Amateurs Justin Hastings and Jose Luis Ballester Barrio (now, that’s a name!) each had themselves a tournament to remember, finishing up T-13 and T-17, respectively. However, they couldn’t pocket any earnings because they were playing for pride and country versus for purses and FedEx Cup points as amateurs. Hastings lost out on $137k or so, and Jose $100k+.
- Winner: Ben Kohles ripped off a 6-under 65 final round and jumped 30 spots on the board, finishing up T-25. That’s a healthy jump that netted him some extra green cheese and much-needed FedEx Cup points to keep him tracking to retain his tour card for ’26.
- Loser: Noah Goodwin’s 3-over par 74 final round cost him 32 spots on the board. Ouch. Good news, he made the cut. Bad news, he didn’t make any real money for doing so thanks to his Sunday dud, and his confidence took a hit yesterday after that paltry round.
