Ryan Fox Wins Wild 2025 RBC Canadian Open — Four-Hole Playoff, Eh?
The 2025 RBC Canadian Open didn’t just deliver drama—it went full hockey-overtime mode. Journeyman Ryan Fox, the powerful Kiwi, outlasted Ryder Cup wannabe Sam Burns in a four-hole playoff at TPC Toronto to claim his second playoff victory in a month.
Mr. Fox. Cool. Calm. Collected. And with a pocket stuffed with $1.76M American greenbacks.
Fox already had one win this year in the OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic, but this one felt different. Canada’s national open had a strong field and tens of thousands of energetic fans. The course brought the challenge, and Fox brought the fireworks.
Meanwhile, Sam Burns played brilliantly—just not “lifting a big ass trophy on 18” brilliantly. Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and curling. It was a great finish for Burns, who has had a lackluster season by his standards. He must keep posting top-5 finishes if he wants to get selected for the US Ryder Cup team later this fall.
Bottom line: Fox flew under the radar and left with the trophy, a fat paycheck, and possibly honorary Canadian citizenship.
Next stop: big boy golf, the US Open.
Winners & Losers from Sunday at the Canadian Open:
Winner/Loser: Canadian pros. Eight Canadians made the cut in their national open (winning!). Still, only one managed to finish Top 25, U. of Washington alum Nick Taylor, who famously won the event two years ago in a playoff against Tommy Boy. It would have been cool to see any of the Canadians seriously contend on Sunday, but it was not meant to be.
Winner/Loser: Burns. His final round 62 vaulted him into the playoff. Losing is never fun. Losing in a playoff is even tougher. But Burns can hold his head high, and with this finish, has jumped up to 15th in Ryder Cup points. He played his way into the discussion to be selected by Captain Bradley.
Loser: Cam Young. Like Burns, he’s had a below-par year on tour, missing more cuts than the number of TGL appearances he collected in the offseason. On his final hole, he went for the green in two from the go-zone with a great chance to make birdie, which would have been enough to qualify him for the playoff. Instead, he airmailed the green and posted a bogey 6, finishing up T-4. So close for Mr. Close. He’ll eventually win a tour event. He’s too good not to. The question is when, and if he’ll beat Tommy Boy Fleetwood to the honor.
Winner: Lanto Griffin. Final round 63. Jumped 32 spots on the board, the biggest leap on Sunday. Too bad he started so far back. He finished up T-27.
Loser: Matteo Manassero. Playing in the last group, the Italian could only muster a final round 1-under 69 that dropped him down the leaderboard. Matteo is going to need to fight to keep his card this season. Finishing T-6 will help, but dropping five spots on the board on Sunday will not help his cause.
