With his Valspar Championship victory on Sunday, Viktor Hovland snapped a winless streak stretching back to the 2023 Tour Championship — and picked up a cool $1,566,000 in the process. That’s one way to shake off a slump.
The 27-year-old Norwegian’s latest cash infusion bumps him into the PGA Tour’s top 40 career earners, now comfortably sitting on a $33 million cushion. Not bad for a guy who, until recently, was more familiar with missed cuts than victory speeches.
As for Justin Thomas, his second-place finish came with a reminder that golf, like life, has a flair for irony. Despite bogeys on two of his last three holes, Thomas padded his already overflowing bank account, recently topping $60 million in career earnings. He’s now within striking distance of his buddy Jordan Spieth — and creeping up on Justin Rose, who’s perched at No. 7 with $66 million.
At this rate, the competition for top-earning Justin could get interesting. Rose might want to keep his phone on — no one likes getting dethroned without a heads-up.
Winners & Losers from Sunday at the Valspar Championship:
- Winner: JT. Even though he blew a tire on the Snake Pit backstretch, he still finished solo 2nd. This season, he’s made the cut in each tournament he’s competed in and has four top tens and two runner-up finishes under his belt. We’re betting a victory is right around the corner? Augusta?
- Loser: Kevin Velo?!? On a day when the mostly unknown tour member needed to post an under-par score to gain much-needed FedEx points to help him keep his card for the 2026 season, he fired a final round 6-over, 77, leaving him T-57. If you’re wondering, he posted the worst score of the day. Ouch.
- Loser: Sahith Theegala. The fan favorite from Pepperdine struggled for most of the week on the uber-tight Innisbrook Resort track. Sunday, he dropped 12 spots on the board after posting one over, 72.
- Winner: Seamus Power. With one of the best names on tour, Mr. Power rifled a final-round 5-under, 66, and leaped 23 spots up the board, good enough for T-8, his first top 10 of the season.
- Loser: Adam Hadwin. He didn’t even make the cut, but after losing his temper Friday and busting a sprinkler head, he became the golf meme of the weekend. He and the fam flew home early, embarrassed and with empty pockets.
Hadwin letting it rip
