Titleist came up big for Russell Henley last week at Bay Hill. His bag was as pure as could be and only featured Titleist gear: fourteen clubs, including Vokey SM10 wedges and a Scotty putter, and Pro V1x pearlies.
Henley’s API WITB Takeaways:
- Unlike some other recent victorious Titleist staffers, Russell teed it up with the manufacturer’s newest GT3 driver and 3-wood. We were a little surprised to see him playing with X HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.5 shafts considering his diminutive size and lower-than-average swing speed. Russell and his fitters know what’s best. So does his bank account.
- He opted to play with a hybrid (TSi2) versus a 5/7 wood. The rough was thick at Bay Hill; maybe he went with the hybrid knowing like everyone else in the field he was going to need to have a club in the bag that he could slash out of the hay when he strayed off course.
- His irons and wedges featured three different steel shaft models, and by choice, unlike some of you reading this article. No pro plays with stock shafts, but most players not playing in a pro tourney yesterday sure do.
- His Scotty Phantom 5 putter looks so good in his hands. I know where to go to try one out and fully intend to.
- On the PGA TOUR, 47 pros who have teed it up so far this year have played with Titleist’s Pro V1 model ball; 46 have played with a Pro V1x. Russell falls into the Pro V1x camp. Here’s some Titleist marketing to help you decide which model is best for you.
