J.J. Spaun, the diminutive victor of the 125th U.S. Open played at burly Oakmont last week, is a Srixon/Cleveland man. His gear and ball set-up for the tourney were emblazoned with logos from his sponsors; however, he also teed it up with Titleist, TaylorMade, and LAB Golf equipment. To end up with a set-up like that, J.J. has spent quality time testing out the newest and greatest gear. Spaun isn’t shy about mixing brands – a true “best tool for the job” approach.
Spaun’s set-up is a finely-tuned, hybrid mix—each club chosen for control, feel, and reliability. But the LAB DF3 putter was arguably his most clutch weapon at Oakmont, helping him roll in some truly massive momentum swings, including his banger on 18 Sunday.
Takeaways from the U.S. Open-winning bag of Mr. J.J. Spaun:
- J.J. ranks 23rd in Total Driving on tour. His weapon of choice for the U.S. Open was a Titleist GT3 driver (9 degrees). This is one of the most popular drivers on tour and is favored by good golfers for its distance, adjustability, and stability.
- TaylorMade is known for making solid, popular 3-woods, and the one Spaun plays with, the Qi10, is popping up in winners’ bags left and right.
- To help attack the long par 3s at Oakmont and to aid hacking it out of the cabbage when possible, Spaun played with an 18-degree Qi10 5-wood. 5-woods and 7-woods were littered throughout most set-ups at Oakmont.
- He teed it up with a more forgiving Srixon ZXi5 4-iron (that shot on16 Sunday was money!), and ZXi7 mid-irons.
- No Vokeys. No big deal. Most, if not all, Srixon players play with sister brand Cleveland wedges, Spaun included.
- LAB Golf DF3 putter. “Hey honey, my birthday is coming up. Don’t be afraid to buy me a LAB putter.” Spaun started the week 40th on tour in Putting. He ended the week #1. Just watch the highlights from his back nine yesterday if you want to debate it.
