Srixon and Cleveland send endorsement checks to Truist victor Sepp Straka annually. Those brands are managed by parent company Dunlap, which originated in the UK and Ireland, but is now owned and operated by Japan-based Sumitomo Rubber Industries. Srixon, Cleveland, Dunlop, and Sumitomo must have been giddy this weekend watching Straka duel with fellow Srixon/Cleveland pitchman Shane Lowry.
While winning, Straka teed it up with Srixon, Cleveland, Callaway, and Odyssey (owned by Callaway) equipment. His ball of choice was the same one that Lowry plays: a Srixon Z-Star XV.
These two top players in the world may play roughly the same gear, but they go about their business in two different ways. Straka likes to hit a draw with every club. Lowry mostly plays a fade. Straka, even though he’s built like a linebacker, bunts his ball around the course, spinning high soft shots that drop like feathers into difficult hole positions. Lowry muscles his boring, low fade (see what we did there?) that chases back to never-neverland pins throughout the round.
Both approaches work, and made for fun watching on ESPN/Golf Channel/CBS this weekend.
Key WITB takeaways:
- Straka may be playing elite golf, but he isn’t playing Callaway’s newest model of drivers and fairway metals. He opts for last season’s Paradym Ai woods versus Callaway’s new Elyte line. One thing is certain: Whoever comes up with the names isn’t a good speller.
- Big man Straka isn’t afraid to play with a 7-wood. What a girlie man! A very rich and successful girlie man whose equipment setup we should all emulate.
- His mixed bag of irons are all new Srixon models. He opts for the easier to hit ZXi5 for his 4 and 5 iron, and the ZXi7 for 6-9. Fancy mixology.
- He didn’t flinch over his final five footer, rolling the rock right into the back of the hole with his Odyssey Stroke Lab Tuttle putter. The older model flat stick can be picked up at 2nd Swing and other online resellers.
- No Vokey. No way!
