Michael Block turned 15 minutes of fame into a month’s worth thanks to his kickass performance this weekend.
Chew on this: last week he gave a few lessons at $125 a pop at Arroyo Trabuco. This weekend he pocketed $288k in purse proceeds and surely thousands more from companies like Nike and TaylorMade whom he reps, as a card-carrying member of the PGA of America, not the PGA Tour.
Now, what about his gear set-up that stands out?
– Block gets a comp set or two of clubs every year from TaylorMade, yet his gamer irons are nine years old. Hmmmm?
– He carried a 5-wood and a utility iron this week. 5-iron was the lowest lofted “traditional” iron he carried. On numerous occasions he hit the utility and fairway woods into par 4’s, and one time had to hit a driver off the deck to reach the green. Block played a big boy course and slayed it, over and over and over again.
– He’s got shiny TaylorMade clubs throughout his bag. He pockets a small(ish) endorsement check from TaylorMade every year. Yet, when he reaches into his bag for a ball, he pegs a Titleist Pro V1. Another Hmmmm…
