WITB Presented by Golf Galaxy: Austin Eckroat, 2024 World Wide Technology Championship

Earlier this year we wrote a WITB article on Austin Eckroat after his 1st PGA TOUR victory. For today’s article, we are going to compare what his Ping set-up looked like in March versus what it looked like this past week.

Driver = the same

3-wood = the same

Irons = the same

Wedges = mostly the same. The one difference, his shafts were painted black in Mexico (DG Tour Issue X100 Onyx shafts)

Puttter = Ping PLD DZB custom (Nov) versus Pin Redwood D66

Ball = the same

The key takeaway here: If it works, don’t go changing things up just because something shinier and new goes on sale at Dick’s or PGA TOUR Superstore. Eckroat has had a great season with two victories and he finished top 50 in the FedEx Cup. He is now more or less guaranteed a spot in every big event he wants to play in 2025.

Key takeaways:

  1. Now is a great time for Eckroat to renegotiate a contract extension with better terms with Ping.
  2. If you’re going to tinker with your gear, let it be your putter. It’s a good idea to have one gamer and a couple of other putters you can turn to when the gamer goes cold.
  3. I like the idea of playing with Onyx shafts in your wedges. When you play wedges, you stand closer to the ball and look more straight down on the ball and face of the club. When you do, you’re more likely to see glare emanating off steel shafts (the clubface too for that matter.) We’re going to try the black shafts as soon as we can get our hands on them.
  4. No Vokeys. We shed a tear. But Eckroat is winning with Ping wedges, so we don’t blame him for keeping those in his bag. It’s time we give his wedges a tryout.
