WITB Presented by Golf Galaxy: Taylor Pendrith, 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Taylor Pendrith won the CJ Cup yesterday, his first PGA TOUR event. With the win, he moved up to #58 in the cockeyed OWGR (cock, because of the ranking anomaly caused by LIV defectors not earning points on the exhibition circuit). He sits one below Alex Noren in world rankings and right above Grayson Murray – both not household names. What does a middling position in the rankings earn you? Definitely not a big equipment deal. But he does have a deal with Srixon – to play their irons and ball.

In addition to Srixon irons, how did he round out his equipment in the CJ Cup? With a smorgasbord of goodies. Four total manufacturers. With a heavy emphasis on Ping woods and Srixon irons. Let’s take a look into his winning bag…

Takeaways:

  1. Most driver free agents tee it up with a Ping 430 and Taylor doesn’t disappoint. And he’s a bomber, averaging 311 yards a rip, good enough for 9th on tour.
  2. His irons are Srixon, and he plays with a split set like 95% of his peers. His 4-iron and 5-iron are the more forgiving ZX5 MK II model; his 6-9 the ZX7 Mk II model. This is a good set up for better players, pros and amateurs.
  3. He carried a 20.5 degree Ping G425 Max 5-wood. This is a surprising/interesting choice since he already hits his ball higher than a July 4th fireworks show.
  4. He putts with the putter that Rickie and Wyndham Clark made famous last year – the Odyssey Jailbird Versa. What came first: the buzz around that putter model last year or Pendrith putting it into his bag? He currently sits 11th on tour in SG: Putting. So whenever he did put it into play, he’s been putting lights out ever since.
  5. He’s one of only a handful of players on tour who plays with a Srixon ball. Yesterday, both Pendrith and Brooks Koepka both won tourneys playing a Srixon. A good day for the ball manufacturer.
