Xander is Callaway’s #1 tour player. And by a longshot, especially thanks to Jon Rahm and Mickelson becoming persona non grata at their Carlsbad headquarters.
Xander’s contract with Callaway must be an interesting one to read over. For example, he uses Callaway irons that are a few generations old, and him playing them isn’t even referenced on Xander’s “Team Callaway” page on their website. Also, in his bag at Troon was an old(er) Mizuno driving iron and Vokey SM10 wedges.
We’re guessing that after the blistering summer Xander has had on the links, which has included his first two major championships, Callaway is ok with Xander being a partial bag player. Especially since he plays with their newest Paradym Ai Smoke driver and Chrome Tour ball.
Key takeaways from Xander’s winning Open Championship bag set-up:
- Known as one of the biggest natural de-lofters on tour, it isn’t any surprise to us that Xander’s driver and 3-wood feature higher lofts than 95% of his peers: Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond (10.5 degrees) and Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond (16.5 degrees).
- Keeping with his higher lofted theme, his primary sand wedge is 56 degrees. With his pronounced hand press, were guessing his launch is more consistent with a 53 or 54 degree wedge, which means Titleist/Vokey have special Xander grind specs just for him
- He wears a Callaway glove. This isn’t a small thing for those of us who go shopping for gloves. Callaway makes a great glove, and if Xander didn’t think so as well, he wouldn’t be wearing one with his legacy on the line. And this week at Troon, in windy and rainy conditions, those gloves performed perfectly.
