Jason Day’s and Lydia Ko’s gear set-ups had two things in common last week while paired up in the Grant Thornton — where they were victorious, picking up some good mojo leading into the last few weeks off before the PGA TOUR jumpstarts the 2024 season at Kapalua Jan. 4th in The Sentry Tournament of Champions. The LPGA Tour kicks off six weeks later on Jan. 18th in FL. with their version of the Tournament of Champions.
Back to the two things in common with the winning pair’s bag set-up: 1) They both teed it up with PING G430 LST drivers. 2) Like many of their peers, they both played with Vokey SM9 wedges, the #1 wedges on the PGA TOUR.
What else did we learn when looking into their bags?
- Lydia plays with three woods and a hybrid. 100% of all non-scratch amateurs should look to carry more woods and hybrids in their bags and less long irons.
- Ping doesn’t make bad wedges, but Lydia is showing Vokey the love. Can’t blame her. The best of the best play the best — VOKEY!
- Day takes a 9-degree lofted driver and changes the hosel settings to add a degree of loft. The sign of a guy who has spent thousands of hours grinding away on the range, testing, testing , and more testing. With the driver, it’s all about the spin rate, and 10-degrees is delivering for him.
- Day played with a 7-wood. Nice. I bet he hits that club a mile high and it lands softer than a baby’s bottom.
- Day swings a SIM Max 3-wood, which is the 3-wood of choice for equipment free agents
- Day has one of the smoothest and most reliable putting strokes on tour. Yet, for more than a dozen years now, he putts with one of the most unattractive putters – TaylorMade’s Spider. Through the years his putter head has shifted Spider styles and colors, but he’s a Spider man through and through.
