Scottie Scheffler wins gold medal behind record-tying final round at 2024 Olympics

– by Gentry Estes, USA TODAY Network / Golfweek

Per Gentry: “The legend of Scottie Scheffler keeps growing, and the latest addition is golden…”

B&B POV: The only thing hotter than Noah Lyles’ feet yesterday in Paris was Scottie Scheffler’s putter. FIRE!

He closed out his gold medal winning performance Sunday with a 9-under 63 to win by one shot over Tommy Fleetwood.

Scheff’s performance at Le Golf National put to rest any debate over who’s had the better 2024 campaign between the big Tex and Xander. No question. Especially watching Xander’s 2-over final round meltdown.

For us, the best moments of the event were watching raw emotion pour out of the #1 player in the world — fist pumps and tears of joy. A legendary performance.

From near gold to missing a medal, Jon Rahm’s late stumble at the Olympics ‘stings’

– by Jay Coffin / Golf Digest

Per Jay: “Jon Rahm was on top of the world. The two-time major champion was six under par after 10 holes Sunday during the final round of the Olympics at Le Golf National outside Paris and held a four-shot lead. There really were no close pursuers…”

B&B POV: But, he did win a LIV event last month which should soften the blow.

What all does Scottie Scheffler get for winning the 2024 Olympics?

– by Cameron Jourdan / Golfweek

Per Cameron: “Scottie Scheffler added yet another bullet point to his resume for Player of the Year on Sunday, winning the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic men’s golf competition at Le Golf National in Paris…”

B&B POV: Although there is no official prize money, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee pays its winning athletes $37,500 for gold medals. Nice job Scottie. He also snags exemptions (which he doesn’t need). More fans. More endorsement money. More legacy. Oh. and a badass gold medal. Unlike the four majors and the singular FedEx Cup which are up for grabs annually, gold medals are precious and are only available for brilliant play once every four years. Congrats to Scottie and his family. What a year!

Rory McIlroy’s ‘sh*tshow’ remark underscores Olympic golf’s deep appeal

– by Alan Bastable / GOLF

Per Alan: “As the final round of the Olympic men’s golf event played out Sunday, it was hard to fathom a better leaderboard…”

B&B POV: After watching the final round yesterday I’m ready to proclaim the Olympics golf’s 5th major championship. Why?

1. It’s played only once every four years — 16 major trophies are handed out for every gold medal earned.
2. The tourney entrant qualification is tougher than any other event in golf. And it’s not even close.
3. When you compete, you’re singularly representing your nation. When you win, millions win. When you lose, well, you get the point.
4. Did we mention the medals. So cool.
