Vegas, baby! Jhonattan Vegas wins 2024 3M Open for first PGA Tour win in seven years

– by Cameron Jourdan / Golfweek

Per Cameron: “The last time Jhonattan Vegas won on the PGA Tour, the 3M Open didn’t exist…”

B&B POV: Jhonattan Vegas bested a weak(ish) PGA Tour field Sunday to win the 3M Open. But a win is a win and the journeyman needed a win. And, with his victory, he jumped into the Top 70 in FedEx points, which if he holds his current position, he’ll qualify for the FedEx playoffs. Congrats to the BIG man from Venezuela.

After YouTube video with Donald Trump, Bryson DeChambeau ‘more than willing to play’ with someone on other side of political aisle

– by Riley Hamel / Golfweek

Per Riley: “On July 23, Bryson DeChambeau released a video playing golf alongside former United States President Donald Trump. As a part of his “Breaking 50” series on YouTube, DeChambeau and Trump played in a scramble from the forward tees…”

B&B POV: Bryson is willing to show any and all politicians who’s the boss…at least the boss on the links. His videos are great. His new outlook and golf persona are refreshing. We just hope it’s authentic. If it truly is, his popularity will soar. And professional golf needs big, engaging personalities more than it’s ever needed them before. Sorry Scottie and Xander – you guys may be #1 and #2 in the world right now, but you aren’t the #1 fan favorite (not named Tiger). Bryson holds that spot.

WITB: Jhonattan Vegas, 2024 3M Open

– Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Jhonattan Vegas’ (love the last name) current winning equipment set-up is a purebred conundrum for fans who love buying gear that PGA Tour winners play with. You see, the only way you’re going to be able to find his driver, fairway wood, and irons online for purchase is if you’re good at finding diamonds in the rough.

His driver is no longer carried by Titleist, or by any retailer for that matter. His fairway finding 3-wood was produced back when Tiger was still hunting for victories; and his MP-4 Mizuno irons — we’re pretty sure he was playing the model while in college at UT. Jhonattan is an equipment free agent. And thanks to his victory—and the thrill of lifting a PGA Tour Big-A trophy yesterday—he isn’t likely to change out his set anytime soon.

Vegas’s Golf Gear:

DRIVER: Titleist TSi3 (9 degrees), with Fujikura Speeder NX 70 TX shaft

FAIRWAY WOOD: TaylorMade M6 – ON SALE (14 degrees), with Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec Black 9 TX shaft

IRONS: Titleist T200 (3), with Project X 125 6.5 shaft, Mizuno MP4 (4-PW), Project X 130 7.0 shafts

WEDGESTitleist Vokey Design SM10  (50, 54 degrees bent to 55) TaylorMade MG Hi-Toe (60 degrees) with Project X 6.5 shafts

PUTTER: L.A.B. Golf Link.1

BALLS: Titleist Pro V1x

PAYDAY! 2024 3M Open & 2024 LIV Golf UK Prize Money Payouts

by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Even though he and his caddy were losing their minds over fan noise all day, Jon Rahm won his first LIV exhibition on Sunday. His team picked up the victory too. Tears were flowing on the last green — surely because he was thinking about the new house he was going to buy with the $4,750,000 he had just won ($4M for the indy win, $750k for the team sub-event). Holy heck that’s a lot of money well earned. His teammate, Tyrrell “Mad Man” Hatton, who’s one of our favorites and is missed greatly on the PGA Tour, skanked a putt on his 18th hole to force a playoff with Rahm. Still, he made more than $2M for the weekend. Golf pays kids. Practice.

Jhonattan Vegas with his victory in the 3M won $1.5M and a two-year PGA Tour exemption. He also garnered enough points with the win to get within striking distance to qualify for every tour Signature event in ’25. Playing in those events next year would come LIV-like riches. Let’s goooo!

KJ Choi crowned Senior Open champion after two-stroke victory at Carnoustie

– by Sky Sports

Per Sky Sports: “The 54-year-old finished with a two-under final round of 70 as he finished 10 under for the weekend at Carnoustie…”

B&B POV: Millions of golfers around the world watched the thrilling and drizzly British Open won by Xander a couple of weeks back. But only a fraction of golf fans around the globe caught K.J. Choi win the Senior British Open at Carnoustie yesterday. The affable and peer-beloved Korean, who’s been underrated since the day he turned pro more than 35 years ago, pulled off the 2-stroke victory over Australian Richard Green. Choi torched the torrid back nine of Carnoustie on Sunday, leading to his first senior major championship. Way to go Choi. We’ve always been a fan of your game.
