Xander Schauffele ignores narrative, wins PGA Championship

– by PGA TOUR

Per PGA TOUR: ” Xander Schauffele ate Italian food and watched basketball the night before the biggest round of his career…”

B&B POV: Xander the Great turned in his card Thursday afternoon after shooting an opening round 9-under, 62. A tournament record. This weekend he went on to win the 106th edition of the PGA Championship going wire-to-wire, finishing up a record 21-under, fending off the best players in the world, including some jack arse from Texas who managed to get arrested on Friday after a hard night of Chipotle and bourbon.

This is the win everyone assumed Xander would make. A major. Lifting the biggest of Big-A trophies (literally). Congrats young man. No more monkey for you.

Kentucky inmate reveals what Scottie Scheffler thought of shocking arrest

– by Ryan Gaydos / FOX News

Per Ryan: “Scottie Scheffler expressed his disbelief that he was arrested as he was being booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections on Friday morning, according to an inmate…”

B&B POV: What was more shocking?: a. In June last year, hearing that the PGA TOUR and LIV had entered into an agreement? Or, b. Reading on X that Scheffler got arrested Friday on his way to the course for taking a police officer for a spin on top of his courtesy car? We’re going with a tie.

During his post-arrest, post-2nd round press conference, Scheffler alluded to not throwing out his name and #1 world ranking while trying to push through the gates Friday AM. That’s where this story becomes nonsensical. The first thing we would have done when approached by the security guard in yellow police would have been rolling down the window and shouting. “Dude. I’m Scheff. World #1. Mr. Green Jacket. Move aside, I need to get into the clubhouse for my rub down to warm up. Valhalla!” If that hadn’t worked, he should have just walked across the street like a good boy. (Note: The biggest winner in this crazy story, the PGA TOUR, for sure. Scottie went from choir boy to a thug in a beat. All golf fans love themselves a thug.)

WITB Winner’s Bag: Xander Schauffele, 2024 PGA Championship

– Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Now that Rahm has joined Mickelson on LIV, Xander Schauffele is Callaway Golf’s #1 endorser. Sadly, you can’t even find either LIV standout on Callaway’s website. Man, has the world of professional golf changed.

Back to Xander: He has earned his #1 position in the pantheon of paid Callaway endorsers. And with his victory yesterday at Valhalla, his fat endorsement contract hopefully will begin to pay off in spades for the Carlsbad-based club and ball manufacturer. Just how big is that bulging contract of his? Our guess is at least $6-7M a year – but he still manages to sneak in a couple of Vokey wedges into his bag for good measure. At least he plays Callaway’s Chrome Tour ball. We wonder if Rahm still tees it up with a Chrome Tour…

PAYDAY! 2024 PGA Championship Prize Money Payouts

– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Xander took home $3.33 million yesterday after winning the PGA Championship at Vahalla. Cha-ching. He now sits in 16th place all-time on the PGA TOUR career money list with $46,598,394. One of the players he leaped this week on the career list was bestie Patrick Cantlay. The next time those guys go out on a double date, Xander better pick up the check. As an aside, we think Scheffler made more than enough to cover his Scheffler v. Louisville PD legal fees thanks in large part to a stellar 6-under, 65 final-round score.

Nelly Korda continues dominant run with sixth victory in last seven starts

– by Kent Paisley / Golf Digest

Per Kent: “Nelly Korda’s 2024 campaign is forcing double takes at the calendar. Korda, 25, earned her sixth victory of the LPGA season at the Mizuho Americas Open, and it is only May…”

B&B POV: Unlike Scottie, Nelly Korda behaved last week and won her sixth event in her last seven starts. Only Tiger has gone on a scorcher as hot as Nelly’s in the last 50 years of professional golf. Simply amazing. She bested Hannah Green by a stroke, finishing up at 14-under par to win the Mizuho Americas Open. She is so far ahead in the world golf rankings that she could take a Tiger-like sabbatical and still keep her top spot.

Good luck world. We’re betting big that Nelly is going to win her 2nd gold medal later this year. And, we’ll be watching.
