Matt McCarty gets 1st PGA Tour win in just third start at Black Desert Championship

– by Jack Hirsh / GOLF

Per Jack: “After Scottie Scheffler, no one has won more in professional golf than Matt McCarty in 2024 and now his winning is not just exclusive to the Korn Ferry Tour…”

B&B POV: Matt McCarty. Get used to reading his name. He was yesterday’s winner of the PGA TOUR’s Black Desert Classic in beautiful Ivins, Utah. The lefty played exceptional golf in Utan; and the course looked fricking amazing on TV!

Recently promoted from Triple-A (Korn Ferry Tour) to the Majors (PGA Tour) after winning three events to move up, Matt is currently on the 4th biggest professional golf heater recorded in 2024. 1. Scottie; 2. Nelly; 3. Xander the Great; 4. Matt McCarty, the pride of Santa Clara University.

With his three ‘24 KFT victories and having lifted the Black Desert Classic Big A Trophy last night, he’s now secured his tour card through the 2026 season, qualified for the Masters, and if he keeps up this torrid pace of success, he’ll qualify for every significant men’s professional golf tournament next season. Nice.

Bryson DeChambeau’s LIV Golf blow as ‘format’ issue leaves league questioning ‘objectivity’

– by John O’Sullivan / Irish Star

Per John: “Bryson DeChambeau has slipped to 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking, leaving the LIV Golf league without any representatives in the top 10…”

B&B POV: Bryson DeChambeau is not ranked top 10 in the world by the organization who produces the Official World Golf Ranking. Let that soak in.

The OWGR is a glorified FedEx Cup, Race to Dubai points mashup. Right now, including any full-time LIV players in the OWGR is nonsensical. Until the PGA TOUR and LIV merge or one swallows the other, Majors and Cups need to establish an easy-to-follow criteria for LIV’rs to qualify. Top 10-15 on a revolving points list of the last 12 mos. of tourneys would suffice, at least for us.

PAYDAY! 2024 Black Desert Championship Prize Money Payouts

– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Like the other PGA TOUR fall events, the 2024 Black Desert Classic had a weak field and small purse compared to regular season events. Matt McCarty didn’t notice. He took home $1,350,000 for his victory and can look forward to playing in the Masters next April.

You know who did notice, everyone finishing T-54 or worse who took home $17,400 or less. For comparison’s sake, T-52 in the Wells Fargo Championship, a Signature event played in May, took home $47,000, nearly 3x as much.

Last week, Kevin Streelman hit a pretty-straight forward chip 7-feet. The problem: it needed to go at least 50. Had he gotten up and down and finished the tourney one stroke lower, he would have won an additional $200k. Ouch…

WITB: Matt McCarty, Black Desert Championship

– Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas:  A quick review of Matt McCarty’s set up from his Black Desert Classic winning bag tells us three clear stories: 1/ He’s a lefty. Love it. 2/ His biggest endorsement contract is signed by some big wig from Ping. 3/ He’s only one of two players on tour who plays a TaylorMade TP5 ball.

Since this summer Matt’s won four tourneys. He isn’t (shouldn’t) messing with his set up anytime soon. Check out this short video of him talking about his gear. Very cool…

How to stay fit as you age, according to Bernhard Langer

– Zephyr Melton / GOLF

Per Zephyr: “Bernhard Langer has seemingly done the impossible as he continues to best Father Time. Although he is on the wrong side of 65 (he turned 67 this summer), he continues to play some spectacular golf. While most people his age are moving up to the forward tees at their retirement community courses, Langer is still competing on the Champions Tour…”

B&B POV: Langer is a German unicorn. A very healthy 67-year-old golfing maestro with cool pants and one of the best follow-throughs in golf unicorn. He’s had a down year on the Champions Tour by his standards, but he’s still top-20 on the points list and monies earned. Just this season, he’s shot his age four times. And lost in a playoff, coming oh-so-close to winning his 47!!! senior tour event. So what is his secret?
