What’s in the Bag (WITB) Presented by Worldwide Golf: Rory McIlroy, Irish Open

For golf Gear Heads, peeks into the bags of the world’s best, and corresponding WITB articles, are better than a double pour of 18-year Macallan. We turn our attention this week to Rory McIlroy’s bespoke setup, which the Northern Irishman used to win his fourth title of the year, the Amgen Irish Open at the K Club.

Before we break down his gear, we pose the question: Do Rory’s golf clubs actually make him a better golfer, or is he just “Hall-of-Fame Rory,” and would have likely won the Irish Open with a rack set from Roger Dunn? That’s our question of the day.

If you’re anything like the rest of us, you think buying Rory’s exact clubs might somehow give you a leg up on your buddies. (Spoiler alert: it won’t. But it’s fun to dream.)

Last week, Rory showed up with a seriously dialed-in setup.

Rory McIlroy’s Golf Gear:

DRIVER: TaylorMade Qi10ON SALE (9 degrees), with Fujikura Ventus Black 6X shaft –  Translation: a pure-bred, big boy stiff, rocket launcher with a steering wheel.

FAIRWAY WOOD: TaylorMade Qi10 – ON SALE (15 degrees), with Fujikura Ventus Black 8X shaft, (18 degrees), with Fujikura Ventus Black 9X shaft – These things basically launch higher and straighter than my last midday takeoff from John Wayne.

IRONS: TaylorMade P760 (4) TaylorMade RORS proto (5-9), with Project X 7.0 shafts – Spoiler: Earlier this year, TaylorMade sold a small batch of the PROTOs. They sold out, and fast. eBay, can you help a brother out?

WEDGES: TaylorMade MG5 (46, 50, 54, 60 degrees), with Project X 6.5 shafts – tweaked just enough to make sure he can flop a ball onto a dime from 30 yards.

PUTTER: TaylorMade Spider Tour X – custom finish, which helped him finish 14th in Strokes Gained: Putting in Ireland.

BALL: TaylorMade TP5X – He switched from the TP5x earlier this year and has been winning ever since. Coincidence? Probably not.
