PAYDAY! 2024 British Open Prize Money Payouts

The purse for this year’s Open Championship was a measly $3.1M – less than all LIV events, every other major, and plenty of PGA Tour signature events (Genesis, Memorial, etc.). But you know what? None of the 157 players who teed it up on Thursday gave two bits shite. Because the winner gets to lift the Claret Jug on Sunday evening; and last night, Xander Schauffele was that man. He also got to go home with $3.1M, but who’s counting?

Key $$$ takeaways from the 152nd edition of the Open Championship:

  1. Xander made more money winning the PGA Championship ($3,330,000) than he did yesterday. The R&A, the governing body who puts on the tourney, was quoted last week saying their purse will likely stay less than each of the other three majors for the foreseeable future.
  2. Ryan Fox moved up 45 spots on the leaderboard yesterday firing the 2nd best score of the day, a 4-under 67. Finishing T-25 earned him $124,617 and much needed FedEx points to help keep his tour card. Had he stayed in place he would have netted $40,280.
  3. Horschel’s (T-2) strong finish catapulted him into the top 30 FedEx Cup points. Finishing top 30 gets you into the Tour Championship ($$$ Cha-Ching) and all signature events in 2025.
  4. Rose’s (T-2) equally strong finish catapulted him into 52nd place in the FedEx Cup standings. It’s imperative that Rose keeps on climbing the points list for a chance to compete in the Tour Championship in late August.
  5. In addition to Xander being a million dollar man yesterday (3x over), Horschel and Rose both cleared $1,000,000, each taking home $1,443,500.
