Finau won the Rocket Mortgage Classic; Stenson prevailed at the LIV Golf Invitational – Bedminster
Two professional golf tournaments featuring PGA TOUR stars finished up Sunday afternoon. Both featured Top 10 players in the world (whether the OWGR currently reflects that or not), both featured fabulous, clutch golf, and had there been a cut in Bedminster, and had Phil Mickelson teed it up in both tourneys, Lefty would have missed both cuts, finishing near the bottom of each respective field. Again.
Finau won for the 2nd week in a row on the PGA TOUR in grand fashion, finishing five clear of 2nd place. Coming in right behind him in T-2 in the Rocket Mortgage were Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Young, both soon to be Finau’s teammates at the Presidents Cup in Sept.
Stenson, who 2-weeks ago was the sitting ’23 European Ryder Cup Captain but was stripped of that position because of his recent pledge of allegiance to the LIV Golf series, overcame heartache and shame Sunday to win LIV Golf Bedminster, his first individual professional golf tournament in more than three years. It’s crazy to comprehend his personal storyline.
Finau won $1.5M Sunday. Stenson won $4.3M.
Finau bested a field of 156 players. Stenson finished in 1st place out of a field of 48.
Finau’s event was broadcast on the Golf Channel and CBS. Stenson’s on YOUTUBE, the free version.
Finau made one bogey in 72 holes. Stenson played in a 54-hole, shotgun start, exhibition.
So who had the better weekend?
Stenson.
The emotional roller coaster and media flogging Stenson has experienced over the past couple of weeks would have broken most professional golfers’ resolve. Just look at how Mickeldick has played since his Shipnuck interview broke.
Look, we have almost zero respect for the guys who jumped to LIV, but what Stenson just accomplished was nothing short of a mental miracle.
We’ve always been a fan of the Iceman, and wish he was still the Ryder Cup Captain and that LIV would vanish along with Bryson, Brooks, Lefty and Partick the Cheat. But there is no turning back the clock now. LIV is here to stay, at least for the next few seasons. We only hope that before the 48 players are named for next year’s 14-event series, most of the current crop of PGA TOUR and DP Tour stars stand their ground and don’t jump into the muck.
