With 100% confidence, I can tell you that Brian Campbell’s finest professional golf accomplishment came yesterday after winning the PGA TOUR Mexico Open in a playoff. And it wasn’t even close. You see, Brian is a Ping “staffer,” and receives a modest endorsement check from them to play their gear and sport their logo on his hat and bag. Did this victory catch Ping by surprise? Uh, yes.
We just peeped his Ping ambassador profile page, and under highlights, it only lists one bullet: ‘Five victories as an amateur.” That’s thinner than thin. Maybe later today they’ll update it to have two bullets.
Key takeaways from Brian’s winning WITB:
- Under immense pressure while playing his 2nd sudden-death playoff hole, Brian turned to his bag and grabbed a Vokey SW to hit his 3rd shot into the par-5 18th green. He drilled his ¾ wedge to a few feet, nearly dunking it for good measure. Brian, the Ping guy, turned to his Titleist Vokey wedge to save the day. Not surprised.
- The gear trend of the year so far on the PGA Tour is seeing 7-woods being put into play. Brian didn’t disappoint, adding a 20-degree Ping G430 LST to his set up.
- The 31-year-old who hails from our backyard in NB/OC/CA, plays with the newest Ping G440 LST driver. He hit a lot of good drives this past week, including one helluva lucky one with his last drive of the tourney. The G440’s new ad tagline, “Even Brian couldn’t hit me OB.”
- Ping has always made sensational irons and putters. Brian’s Blueprints back up our opinion mightedly. For better players, they are a solid iron choice. Right now, in our humble opinion, Ping is manufacturing as good equipment up and down the bag as any of the major OEMs. And they just may be making the best…
- Brian isn’t a bomber off the tee, so it makes sense to us that he tees it up with a 10.5-degree lofted driver model. All fairways on tour run firm. The longer Brian’s tee balls stay in the air, the greater the chance he isn’t going to be outdriven by the big boys by 40+, which was happening all weekend by Aldrich. Note: Aldrich is going to be driving it by many of the world’s best by 40+ for the next 20 years. He’s ridiculously long.
