I don’t know about you, but when I watch Ludvig Aberg swing a golf club, my body gets all tingly and I start thinking in clichés and plaudits – “Poetry in motion.” “Winners win.” “He swings it like Hogan.” When Titleist sees him swing it–and win tourneys like he did yesterday at Torrey–they too are blown away: “Whatever we pay him to play our clubs and our balls and carry our bag is worth every frickin’ penny. He’s so glorious and handsome! Long live the Big Swede!”
Back to reality. Ludvig is making bank on and off the course.
Off the course, a big bank banger has to be his long-term Titleist contract he entered into after turning pro a couple of years ago. We’re also assuming the terms have been renegotiated in good faith. If not, Titleist better lock him in a cellar near Zed when he’s not hitting rippers and slinging darts, because the other big OEM’s will come after him with blank checks, starting with TaylorMade whose fairway woods he played with this past week while winning the Genesis; or Callaway, whose putter he used to win the 3rd Signature event of the season featuring 46 of the top 50 golfers in the world (sans LIV’rs).
Key takeaways from Ludvig’s WITB:
- Not only hasn’t he put into play Titleist’s newest driver model (choosing to rip a 9-degree TSR2 versus the recently released GT), he didn’t even tee it up with Titleist fairway metals, opting instead to play woods from the TaylorMade Stealth 2 line.
- Like a ton of other players in the field last week, he put into a play a 7-wood. Especially when the wind is up, Torrey’s par 3’s play long. And when the greens are firm, which they were Saturday and Sunday, approach shots into par fives need to by dropping from the sky versus coming in hot!
- Vokey wedges, but of course. Standard lofts: 50, 54, 60.
- Odyssey White Hot Versa #1 Callaway putter. The ladies may love Ludvig, but pros and the best amateurs in the world love the model of putter he used to win his 2nd PGA TOUR event.
