WITB Winner’s Bag: Team Tavatanakit/Knapp, 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational

Patty Tavatanakit and Jake Knapp were victorious this weekend in the Grant Thornton. Their victory will never count as an official tour win for either, but that doesn’t change that they balled out and beat some great teams. With the PGA TOUR starting up the first week of January, and the LPGA following suit a few weeks later, this win should springboard both players into a solid start for the ’25 season.

How about the equipment they teed it up with this past week? What did we see? What did we learn? First off, Patty is one of Titleist’s most popular female endorsers. She’s playing a full bag of Titleist beauties. Jake, well, his bag is a bit more smorgasbord. Even though he’s a PXG guy, he tees it up with four different manufacturers and an obscure Titleist golf ball model. What’s consistent with the winning pair’s set ups? They both play with Vokey wedges. Shocked!

Key takeaways:

  1. Both Patty and Jake play with three woods. Patty with a driver, 3-wood, and 5-wood; Jake with a driver, 2-wood, and 5-wood. Jake loves hitting the long ball, and oftentimes, that long ball ends up in the shi*, so carrying a 2-wood allows him to play a wood off of the tee that still goes nearly 300 yards but also lands in fewer backyards.
  2. Patty’s choice for woods and irons matches up closely with other Titleist staffers, male and female. However, compared to her male counterparts, she’s using less stiff and lighter shafts. Her set up should be replicated by more male golfers. Unless you have a low single-digit handicap or look like Joey Bosa, you really shouldn’t be playing with heavy, extra-stiff shafted clubs.
  3. Like 20 of his PGA TOUR brethren, Jake tees it up with the Ping G430 LST model driver. And doesn’t get paid to do so like most others who play the model. The 2nd most popular driver on tour is the Titleist TSR3 model.
  4. Patty’s wedges are 50, 56 and 60 degrees Vokey SM 10 models. Jake plays with a 52 degree PXG Sugar Daddy II (interesting name), 56 degree Vokey SM9, and a 60 degree Vokey Wedgeworks model. Lot’s of delicious Vokey wedges between the two of them.
  5. Both play Titleist golf balls: Patty, the Pro V1x model; and Jake, the Pro V1 Left Dot model. Only three other PGA pros play the Left Dot model which is designed for tour players who prefer a lower trajectory and less full swing spin, but still want their ball to feel soft and spinny around the green.
