J.J. Spaun showed he has grit required to win a U.S. Open at a golf course like Oakmont
– by Adam Schupak / Golfweek
Per Adam: “J.J. Spaun needed a Lou Holtz talk from Adam Schriber…”
B&B POV: It was thrilling to witness J.J. Spaun win the U.S. Open at Oakmont—what a storybook moment draining that putt on 18! Spaun stumbled with five bogeys in the opening six holes of Sunday, collecting epic bad breaks and falling way back. But after a nearly 95‑minute rain delay, he roared back like the lil’ boss he is—birdies on holes 12, 14, 17, and a dramatic 64‑foot final-hole birdie to win it. His grit was remarkable. And his putt on 18 became an all-time great US Open moment as soon as it dropped into the hole. Incredible.
U.S. Open 2025: A chaotic, messy finish could have been avoided, but the USGA chose to roll the dice
– by Dave Shedloski / Golf Digest
Per Dave: “Weather is always the X factor in tournament golf. It affects everything. Course conditions and playability. Setup. Scoring. Pace of play. Good weather or bad. Doesn’t matter. Weather has an undeniable impact…”
B&B POV: J.J. Spaun was the #1 story Sunday at Oakmont, dramatically winning the tourney with a walk-off 65-foot putt on his 72nd and final hole. The 2nd biggest story: The sloppy conditions the players were forced to play in when the USGA decided not to move up tee-times, opting to roll the dice instead. They had a tough decision to make, but we believe they made the wrong one. Refer to Sam Burns.
What’s in the Bag (WITB): J.J. Spaun, 2025 Edition
– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys
Per Thomas: J.J. Spaun, the diminutive victor of the 125th U.S. Open played at burly Oakmont last week, is a Srixon/Cleveland man. His gear and ball set-up for the tourney were emblazoned with logos from his sponsors; however, he also teed it up with Titleist, TaylorMade, and LAB Golf equipment. To end up with a set-up like that, J.J. has spent quality time testing out the newest and greatest gear. Spaun isn’t shy about mixing brands – a true “best tool for the job” approach.
Spaun Wins the Day! Winners & Losers from Sunday at the U.S. Open
– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys
Per Thomas: You ever play golf in a car wash? No? Well, that’s kind of what the final round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont felt like. Sloppy. After a mostly picture-perfect week of slow-burn drama, Sunday turned into an episode of Golf Gone Wild: Weather Delay Edition.
J.J. Spaun shares Tiger Woods story that helped inspire U.S. Open win
– by GolfWRX Staff / GolfWRX
Per Staff: “J.J. Spaun was the last man standing on Sunday at Oakmont, producing four birdies in his final six holes to capture the U.S. Open in style…”
B&B POV: Is Tiger the new Yoda of professional golf? Next to Jack Nicklaus, no one knows what it’s like to compete for and win majors more than the GOAT. Today, when he spreads his majors gospel, players take notes. As they should.
