TaylorMade staffer Michael Thorbjornsen has been labeled “the next big thing” for years.
The former Stanford standout possessed all the tools—elite ball speed, world-class iron play, and the confidence to compete with the best players in the world. The only thing missing was a PGA TOUR trophy.
That changed Sunday at the Rocket Classic.
Thorbjornsen closed with a bogey-free 64 to earn his first PGA TOUR victory, holding off Xander Schauffele to become the final champion at Detroit Golf Club. The win was worth $1.8 million, locked up his PGA TOUR card, secured a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, and his sponsors very, very happy.
His TaylorMade setup isn’t loaded with game-improvement clubs or extra forgiveness. Instead, it’s built for one thing—elite shot-making. This kid has game!
Here’s a complete look at Michael Thorbjornsen’s winning setup from the 2026 Rocket Classic.

Driver
TaylorMade Qi4D LS (9°) – SHOP NOW
Shaft: Fujikura Ventus Black VeloCore+ 7 X
Thorbjornsen begins the bag with TaylorMade’s low-spin Qi4D LS driver, a model designed for golfers who generate plenty of speed and want maximum control off the tee.
Paired with the Fujikura Ventus Black VeloCore+ 7 X shaft, the setup delivers a penetrating ball flight while providing the stability needed to swing aggressively under pressure. He did just that on Sunday.
For one of the TOUR’s longest hitters, it’s the perfect combination of distance and accuracy.
Mini Driver
TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver (13.5°) – SHOP NOW
Shaft: Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 8 X
One of the most interesting clubs in Thorbjornsen’s bag isn’t a traditional fairway wood—it’s a mini driver.
The TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver gives him another option on tighter driving holes where positioning outweighs raw distance. With a slightly smaller profile than a driver and more forgiveness than 3-wood or driving iron, it’s become an increasingly popular option among TOUR players.
The Ventus TR Blue 8 X shaft provides a slightly different launch profile than his driver, allowing Thorbjornsen to fine-tune trajectory depending on the shot.
Irons
- TaylorMade P770 (3-iron) – SHOP NOW
- TaylorMade P7MC (4-iron) – SHOP NOW
- TaylorMade P7MB (5-PW) – SHOP NOW
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100
This is where Thorbjornsen’s confidence as a ball striker becomes obvious.
He carries just one forgiving iron—a TaylorMade P770 3-iron—to provide a little extra launch and forgiveness at the top of the bag.
From there, it’s all precision.
His 4-iron is a TaylorMade P7MC cavity back before transitioning into TaylorMade P7MB blades from the 5-iron through pitching wedge.
That’s an incredibly demanding setup that very few golfers could successfully play. Muscle-back blades reward precise contact with unmatched feel, trajectory control, and shot-making versatility, but they offer very little forgiveness on mishits.
For a player whose iron play has always been his greatest strength, the setup makes perfect sense.
The irons are paired with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts, a longtime favorite among PGA TOUR professionals thanks to their consistency and penetrating ball flight.
Wedges
TaylorMade MG5 –SHOP NOW
- 52° (SB09)
- 56° (SB12)
- 60° (TW11) – TW = the big cat grind
Shafts: KBS Tour V 120 X
Around the greens, Thorbjornsen relies on three TaylorMade MG5 wedges that provide consistent distance gaps and exceptional versatility.
The 52-degree wedge is his go-to option for full-swing approach shots, while the 56-degree handles everything from bunker shots to controlled pitch shots. His 60-degree TW11 wedge—designed with input from Tiger Woods—gives him the ability to hit high, soft shots with plenty of spin when the situation demands it.
The KBS Tour V 120 X shafts complement the rest of his setup by producing a penetrating flight without sacrificing feel.
Putter
TaylorMade Spider Tour X – SHOP NOW
Grip: SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour
Like many PGA TOUR winners, Thorbjornsen relied on a hot putter when the pressure peaked.
The Spider Tour X has become TaylorMade’s most successful putter thanks to its high-MOI design and exceptional stability. Combined with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip, the setup helped Thorbjornsen confidently roll in the putts he needed during Sunday’s final round.
Golf Ball
TaylorMade TP5 – SHOP NOW
Completing the setup is the TaylorMade TP5 golf ball.
The five-layer construction provides low driver spin, plenty of iron spin, and excellent greenside control, making it one of the most played golf balls on the PGA TOUR. For an aggressive player like Thorbjornsen, it’s an ideal fit.
If the Rocket Classic is any indication, this won’t be the last time we break down a winning bag belonging to Michael Thorbjornsen.
