WITB Winner’s Bag: Camilo Villegas, 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Oh, Camilo. We are so happy to be writing this article after your big win yesterday in beautiful Bermuda.

Having last won on tour in 2014, it’s no surprise to us that Camilo is an equipment free agent. And after finishing T-2 and 1st the past two weeks, we think he should stay a free agent and continue to play with his ragtag collection of birdie-producing, dollar divot digging, Big-A worthy weapons.

Easily the biggest takeaway we have from looking into his bag of clubs is his set-up resembles what a scratch golfer would be using, not a PGA TOUR player. His WITB gear looks different than any other player we’ve seen this year. By a longshot. Not surprisingly he’s carrying equipment made by four different manufacturers, which is an average number for a PGA TOUR. But his set-up is different, and in a big way.

Takeaways:

  1. He carries a 21-degree, 4-year-old 5-wood (which is the loft of a standard 7-wood) and a 24-degree hybrid. One of these clubs he can hit his famous stinger with. We’re guessing it’s the 5/7 wood because fairway woods usually allow for more playability than a hybrid, especially a 24-degree hybrid. Rarely, if ever, do you ever see a pro-level player use a 5/7 wood and 4/5 hybrid.
  2. Not only is his Srixon ZX5 4-iron a player distance iron (easier to hit than a traditional “pro-forged” iron), but his 5-iron is too. You never see this on tour. Like NEVER.
  3. He uses Vokey wedges. No shit. Who doesn’t? Unless they are getting paid by Cleveland (good wedges), Ping (not so good) or Callaway (good’ish), Vokey is the call. Even many of the TaylorMade staff use Vokey. Because Vokey is the best, hands down.
  4. We are seeing more L.A.B. putters pop up on WITB lists. In all honesty, we’ve never tested. We need to.
