WITB Winner’s Bag: Erik van Rooyen, 2023 World Wide Technology Championship

Erik van Rooyen just demolished Tiger’s course in Cabo. And he wasn’t the only one—9 players shot -20 or better over four rounds. But he earned the spotlight and lifted the Big-A with tears in his eyes and a big fat $1.4M check in his back pocket. van Rooyen is a full bag Callaway man, from his driver all the way to his white pearlies printed with Chrome Soft X.

Key takeaways from what we see from the pirate’s set up:

  • He prefers the smaller Pardaym head (Triple Diamond) to others in the Paradym line. This is pretty a common selection for the tour guys, including Callaway’s #1 bag man, Jon Rahm.
  • The loft on his driver is standard too, 9 degrees, but his shaft is lighter than many of his peers. He generates plenty of clubhead speed, so his set-up works. Or at least it worked well enough this week. He’s only ranked as the 71st best driver on tour. He must have been licking his lips when he saw the wide-open fairways at Tiger’s course at Diamante. Grip it, rip it, find it, and flip it. A perfect course for an average PGA TOUR driver of the ball.
  • No 3-wood. Well, he sure as heck didn’t need one on his last hole of the tourney. He ripped a 2-iron (X Forged UT) off the tee and 3-hybrid (Apex UW 21 degrees) into the green, setting up his eagle putt, which he drained like a boss.
  • The stamps on his wedges look just as tight as twisty stache and tapered joggers. Very cool.
