Your Golf News Update – Mon., May 5, Edition

Monday, May 5th, 2025 Balls & Bogeys Golf News Edition

Scottie Scheffler’s ruthless victory at the Byron Nelson instantly reminds us he’s ready for the busy summer ahead

– by Joel Beall / Golf Digest

Per Joel: “The victory march ended with a whisper. There was a stubbed chip several holes prior, a missed putt at history; the champion offered just a perfunctory wave and casually dropped his ball during a fumbled attempt to pocket it…”

B&B POV: By his hall-of-fame career-in-the-making standards, Scheff was having a down year. However, it only took one week to flip that script. Yesterday, he posted the PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record while winning his home state’s Byron Nelson Classic.

The PGA Championship is in two weeks. Rory won the Masters, Bryson just won a LIV event, and Scheff just won on the PGA Tour. Look out, world – here comes some fun at Quail Hollow.

After letting the last few leads squander, Bryson DeChambeau holds on to win in last start before PGA Championship

– by Evan Priest / Golf Digest

Per Evan: “Over the past three Sundays of competition, Bryson DeChambeau felt that a degree of youthful, reckless abandon had been missing from his game as he struggled to close out victories….”

B&B POV: We will readily admit that Bryson DeChambeau playing well in majors is great for golf. Bryson playing well on the PGA TOUR would be a sign of even better things. But, coming off his victory yesterday in the LIV (enter name of country) event, his game has rounded into form at just the right time to contend in two weeks against the world’s best in the PGA Championship.

What’s in the Bag (WITB): Scottie Scheffler, 2025 Edition

– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: This past winning week, Scottie Scheffler’s golf bag featured a blend of TaylorMade, Titleist, and Srixon equipment.

Only Rory might drive it better than Scheffler—and even that’s debatable. Scottie’s weapon of choice? A TaylorMade Qi10 (8° tweaked to 8.25°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft, measuring a beastly 45 inches. Most mere mortals need more loft, more flex, and an inch less shaft—but this magic wand does the trick for Scheff.

He switched to the Qi10 in early 2024, picking it over the LS version for its perfect blend of distance and forgiveness. And when he swings it, the ball obeys.

The 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Payouts: Winners & Losers

– by Thomas Hamden / Balls & Bogeys

Per Thomas: Scottie Scheffler delivered a commanding win at the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, finishing at 31-under-par to tie the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record. The victory, his first of the season and 14th career PGA Tour title, earned him $1.782 million. Scheffler remains the undisputed World No. 1, holding the top spot for over 100 consecutive weeks. The win was especially meaningful as it came in his hometown of McKinney, Texas, where he first played professionally over a decade ago…

Lynch: Donald Trump is trying to bully his way to an Open at Turnberry, but he’ll be a loser

– by Eamon Lynch / Golfweek

Per Eamon: “There was a time when major championship venues were selected largely on the merits of the golf course, but that was back around the time that Jimmy Carter had to place his peanut farm in a blind trust to avoid the appearance of enriching himself off the presidency, both concepts now quaint relics of a bygone era. The criteria for deciding where majors are held now places greater priority on commercial returns and logistics, even among the threadbare seaside towns of the British Isles…”

B&B POV: Turnberry is a world-class golf course fit for kings, queens, and the world’s best players. But like Bandon Dunes on the west coast of Oregon, Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland, cannot support the infrastructure and hotel rooms necessary to host a major golf tournament and the hundreds of thousands of fans wanting to attend. Maybe it will have sufficient resources to host someday, but for now, it’s merely a pipe dream. Sorry President Trump.
